They must be short-term and based on a political pact

In light of the difficult situation Bolivia is going through, economists are proposing urgent short-term measures and a political pact to stabilize the economy and make it to August; otherwise, the country could fall into a coma and the situation would worsen. In the 1990s, the phrase was: “whether the country wanted a soft landing or a crash landing”; now it’s in intensive care and urgent surgical action is needed.

Economist and professor at the Bolivian Catholic University (UCB), Gonzalo Chávez, compared the country’s economic situation to that of a patient in intensive care, slipping into a coma; he therefore proposes urgent measures so that the patient can at least walk to August.

Among his proposals are a total ban on official travel and the elimination of unnecessary consultancies; as well as suspending the public sector salary increase, as it can no longer grow by even a cent.

He also reiterates the selective elimination of fuel subsidies for high-end vehicles, cooperatives, large agribusinesses, and construction companies, maintaining them only for vulnerable families and public transportation.

In response to the recent blockades, the National Chamber of Industries (CNI), through its president Gonzalo Morales, issued an urgent call for rationality and a sense of national responsibility, urging the parties involved to stop these pressure tactics that are worsening Bolivia’s already delicate economic situation.
