Bolivia is at the bottom of the table of agricultural yields in the region, according to estimates included in a World Bank study. This situation is shared with Nicaragua Honduras and Guatemala.
According to the statistics of the international organization, Bolivia is in 0.3 of a scale of 1 in reference to the total cultivated land with respect to the suitable land.
Countries such as Haiti, Cuba and El Salvador have developed better conditions of land yield and record indicators close to one.
In order to improve the performance of the economies of the region, delegates from 17 countries approved the new institutional action plan 2018-2022 of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), which seeks to promote agricultural activity and rural development in the hemisphere.
“For Bolivia agriculture is a fundamental strategic sector in the integral projection of development. The country has great opportunities and challenges inherent to the complexity inherent in the production of food, which can become factors of differentiation at the economic, social, environmental and productive levels,” said Santiago Vélez, IICA representative in Bolivia, in dialogue with EL DIARIO.
“We need to continue promoting rural agroindustry in the different production complexes, considering them from preproduction, trade, consumption, generation of value-added products differentiated by their production and trade method. In addition, tariff and non-tariff measures framed in trade agreements should be taken into account,” he said.
However, productivity differs in the eastern regions from the highlands where satellite technologies are applied in the first case, while in the west practically the land is concentrated in a high proportion in family agriculture.
