Bolivian passes to final phase of a pianist contest

Santiago Chávez Auzza, the 16-year-old Bolivian pianist, qualified for the final phase of the VI National and International Piano Contest “José Jacinto Cuevas” Yamaha, which takes place in Mexican territory.

The contest is a biennial event, whose first edition was dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the death of maestro Cuevas and took place in the City of Mérida, from November 23 to 30, 2008, and since then it was carried out continuously in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Santiago is a young Bolivian talent, who last year won the Grand Prize at the International Piano Encounter at the Italy 13th International Piano Meeting. In addition, he was the youngest and only Latin American pianist selected among musicians from Germany, Russia, South Korea, China, Croatia and Belgium.

The contest began on the morning of Thursday 22, with the debut of the pianists of the major category; That afternoon the young pianists entered the competition.

To participate, Chávez sent a DVD with the recording of the Prelude and Fugue by J. S. Bach and the first movement of the classical Sonata (J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart or L. v. Beethoven), which he played in the first phase of the contest.

In the second round Santiago had to perform a Mexican play and three other pieces, in a 35-minute repertoire.

The winner of the youth category will be awarded 50,000 Mexican pesos (US $ 2,441), will offer a recital at the José Peón Contreras theater, in Mérida, Yucatán, in 2019, and will record a 60-minute record in a professional studio , for free distribution.
