Due to contamination

The use of mercury in illegal mining generates extremely high levels of contamination.

Faced with the serious impacts and damages caused by mining activity on the population living along the riverbanks and on the commercialization of their product, the fishing sector has called for the suspension of mercury use and the cessation of this activity in the basins of the Beni River.

“We express our concern about the effects that these activities have on fishing and the damage they are causing, both to the populations along the riverbanks and to the reputation of our fishing sector,” reads a statement from the fishing sector.

After a meeting between 11 associations of fishermen and fish traders from the municipalities of Rurrenabaque and San Buenaventura, with indigenous communities of the Tacana, Ocitb, and Esse Ejja Indigenous Territory (TCO), this sector determined seven demands aimed at stopping mining activity in 12 basins of the Beni River.

Among them, they demand the suspension of illegal mining activity, gold mining control in the headwaters of the river to prevent mercury contamination in the lower basin, the halt of new mining concessions, and the implementation of a monitoring system for mercury contamination in the flesh of their products.

“Supporting our right to fish and the importance of our sector for food security, in accordance with the provisions of (…) National Law No. 938, Sustainable Fishing and Aquaculture Law of 2017, and supported by (…) the Regulation for fishing and commercialization of fish species in the department of Beni,” the statement mentions.

The meeting of traders and fishermen took place on April 12 and 13 at the First Beni River Fishermen’s Meeting, with the aim of analyzing the impacts of illegal mining and the indiscriminate exploitation of gold.
