It is estimated that some 4,000 hectares have been affected by the fire
The fire that affects the Otuquis National Park decreased its intensity this Tuesday, July 11, after entering a humid area. Despite this improvement, the Santa Cruz Governor’s Office pointed out that land access to the area continues to be complicated. In this sense, they requested the collaboration of the central Government to fight the fire from the air.
Jhonny Rojas, departmental secretary for the Environment, highlighted the need for specialized logistics to deal with the fire in this area. Likewise, he highlighted the importance of carrying out a reconnaissance overflight and carrying out water discharges if necessary.
“Today the fire is in a humid area, due to which the fire has decreased in intensity, but it is still active. Currently, firefighters from the Government, Sernap park rangers and a backhoe from the Mutún steel company are working. We hope that military troops can enter today,” Rojas said.
However, he regretted the lack of pronouncement on the part of the Government in the face of this emergency, despite the efforts of the Office of the Governor to communicate with the Vice Minister of Civil Defense, Juan Carlos Calvimontes.
The fire originated last Saturday on the border with Brazil, in Puerto Coimbra, and later spread to Bolivian territory. Faced with this situation, the forest firefighters of the Office of the Governor and Sernap park rangers entered the area in a boat to begin combat work. According to the latest report, it is estimated that around 4,000 hectares have been affected by the flames.
Heat sources
According to the Forest Fire Early Warning System (Satif), this Tuesday a total of 475 sources of heat were registered in the department, mainly concentrated in the municipalities of San Ignacio de Velasco, Concepción, San José de Chiquitos and Cabezas.

El fuego que afecta al Parque Nacional Otuquis disminuyó su intensidad este martes, 11 de julio, después de ingresar a una zona húmeda. A pesar de esta mejora, la Gobernación cruceña señaló que el acceso terrestre a la zona continúa siendo complicado. En este sentido, solicitó la colaboración del Gobierno para combatir el incendio desde el aire.
Jhonny Rojas, secretario departamental de Medio Ambiente, destacó la necesidad de contar con una logística especializada para hacer frente al fuego en esta área. Asimismo, resaltó la importancia de realizar un sobrevuelo de reconocimiento y efectuar descargas de agua si es necesario.
“Hoy el fuego se encuentra en una zona húmeda, por el cual el fuego ha bajado en su intensidad, pero continúa activo. Actualmente, están trabajando bomberos de la Gobernación, guardaparques del Sernap y una retroexcavadora de la siderúrgica Mutún. Esperamos que hoy puedan ingresar efectivos militares”, indicó Rojas.
Sin embargo, lamentó la falta de pronunciamiento por parte del Gobierno frente a esta emergencia, a pesar de los intentos de comunicación de la Gobernación con el viceministro de Defensa Civil, Juan Carlos Calvimontes.
El incendio se originó el pasado sábado en la frontera con Brasil, en Puerto Coímbra, y posteriormente se extendió al territorio boliviano. Ante esta situación, los bomberos forestales de la Gobernación y los guardaparques del Sernap se adentraron en la zona en una lancha para iniciar las labores de combate. Según el último informe, se estima que alrededor de 4.000 hectáreas han sido afectadas por las llamas.
Focos de calor
Según el Sistema de Alerta Temprana de Incendios Forestales (Satif), este martes se registraron un total de 475 focos de calor en el departamento, concentrados principalmente en los municipios de San Ignacio de Velasco, Concepción, San José de Chiquitos y Cabezas.
