Fish mortality in the protected area
‘Unexplained’ fish kill in Noel Kempff Mercado Park
It happened at the end of last year in the Paraguá river and no State institution analyzed the water or gave public explanations
A fish death was recorded in the Paraguá river, in the Noel Kempff Mercado park, located in the eastern part of the department of Santa Cruz, at the end of last year and to date the causes are unknown.
“We said that it was possibly caused by the acidic waters of the ash, the result of the fires,” shared his theory a member of the protection body of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park (PNNKM), about the causes of the mortality of fish registered in the Paraguá river at the end of last year.
However, he also recognized that this area, between Florida and Porvenir, is humid, with shallows, not like the Caparuch plateau, where a natural fire could occur. “There was some human intervention in that sector,” he said, and asked to keep his name confidential.
According to him, the flames appeared in two sectors, one of these above the Los Fierros camp, “where the park rangers almost did not reach there, nor the fishermen, and where the vegetation burned for almost a whole month; there were about 200,000 hectares, and the shooting followed immediately, where the policeman died,” he recalled.
The forest guardian reported that the first heavy rains occur in October and November, and in December and January, when there was the mortality between Porvenir and Florida, there is no longer any possibility of acid rain.
Likewise, he said that there was another death in La Esperancita in July of last year, and that this community presented the complaint to the Ministry of the Environment and Water (MMAyA), and that in that case water samples were taken.
“When we went, it was suspected that the Brazilians were possibly using some chemical product for their livestock and with the rains it went into the ravines and that is why the mortality occurred,” he commented.

Another park ranger explained that water samples were taken from the area where the ‘inexplicable’ mortality occurred, but it was not known what happened to them, whether they were analyzed or not.
The Santa Cruz Governor’s Office and the Noel Kempff Mercado Natural History Museum were asked if they took water samples, and they denied it.
In the same way, he consulted with the head of protection of the Noel Kempff Mercado Park, Elmar Peña, and said that he would find out, but in the end there was no response.
The same question was sent to the management of the national protected area, dependent on Sernap, from where they explained that through a report it was revealed that the mortality was the product of the ashes of the fires and subsequent rains.
They also assured that these fires are caused by natural phenomena, such as lightning strikes. “We are based on reports from park rangers who have visited the place and also on the probability of mortality due to sedimentation,” they explained.
In addition, from the direction of the PNNKM they confirmed that the analysis of the water sample with the pertinent entity was not carried out.

Una mortandad de peces se registró en el río Paraguá, del parque Noel Kempff Mercado, ubicado en la zona este del departamento de Santa Cruz, a fines del año pasado y hasta la fecha se desconocen las causas.
“Nosotros decíamos que posiblemente fue ocasionado por las aguas ácidas de la ceniza, fruto de los incendios”, compartió su teoría un miembro del cuerpo de protección del Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado (PNNKM), sobre las causas de la mortandad de peces registrada en el río Paraguá a finales del año pasado.
Sin embargo, también reconoció que esa zona, entre Florida y Porvenir, es húmeda, de bajíos. no como la meseta de Caparuch, donde sí podría darse un incendio natural. “Alguna intervención humana hubo en ese sector”, indicó, y pidió mantener su nombre en reserva.
Según él, las llamas aparecieron en dos sectores, uno de estos arriba del campamento Los Fierros, “donde los guardaparques casi no llegan, ni pescadores, y donde la vegetación se quemó por casi todo un mes; fueron como unas 200 mil hectáreas, y enseguida vino la balacera, donde murió el policía”, recordó.
El guardián del bosque informó que en octubre y noviembre ocurren las primeras lluvias fuertes, y en diciembre y enero, cuando hubo la mortandad entre Porvenir y Florida, ya no hay posibilidad de lluvia ácida.
Asimismo, dijo que hubo otra mortandad en La Esperancita en julio del año pasado, y que esa comunidad presentó la denuncia al Ministerio de Medioambiente y Agua (MMAyA), y que en ese caso sí se tomaron muestras de agua.
“Cuando fuimos, se sospechaba que posiblemente los brasileños estaban utilizando algún producto químico para su ganadería y con las lluvias eso se fue a las quebradas y por eso ocurrió la mortandad”, comentó.

Otro guardaparques explicó que se tomaron muestras de agua de la zona donde hubo la mortandad ‘inexplicable’, pero que no se supo qué pasó con estas, si fueron analizadas o no.
Se consultó a la Gobernación de Santa Cruz y al Museo de Historia Natural Noel Kempff Mercado si hicieron tomas de muestras de agua, y lo negaron.
Del mismo modo, se consultó con el jefe de protección del Parque Noel Kempff Mercado, Elmar Peña, y dijo que averiguaría, pero finalmente no hubo respuesta.
La misma pregunta se hizo llegar a la dirección del área protegida nacional, dependiente del Sernap, desde donde explicaron que a través de un informe se dio a conocer que la mortandad fue producto de las cenizas de los incendios y posteriores lluvias.
Asimismo, aseguraron que estos incendios se dan por fenómenos naturales, como la caída de los rayos. “Nos basamos en informes de los guardaparques que han visitado el lugar y también en la probabilidad de mortandad por la sedimentación”, explicaron.
Además, desde la dirección del PNNKM confirmaron que no se concretó el análisis de la muestra de agua con la entidad pertinente.
