They rescue a porcupine with serious burns in El Torno
It takes about 30 days for the wounds to heal. A biologist keeps the female porcupine under surveillance to feed her and monitor her recovery
The fire that started in El Torno alarmed many families who saw the flames approaching their homes. Fire brigades arrived at the fire to contain the flames and protect the lives of people. In the dark, while long-suffering volunteers fought the fire, wild animals tried to flee from it.
Not everyone made it. Neighbors who came to support the firefighters rescued an adult porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) with severe burns. She is one more of the many silent victims that forest fires leave in our fields.
The biologist Luis Gálvez responded to the call of the neighbors. After recovering the animal, and due to the inconvenience of the hour (it occurred at dawn), he took her to his house where he applied milking cream as a first measure. He also sought to hydrate and feed her.
By day, Gálvez took the porcupine to the veterinarian Pet Club. There, Adriana Lucía García, a specialist in wildlife animals, evaluated the animal.
“Has second-degree burns on her legs and belly. Her neck and face were also affected,” says Gálvez by phone. For four years he has been dedicated to rescuing animals.
The severity of the burns require treatment that can last a month. “For now, we apply creams for burns and saline to heal the wounds,” he explains. That requires permanent attention, so she is under observation at Luis’ house.
The porcupine also needs help feeding. “It’s fine. It’s a strong specimen. But this species holds the food with its legs to eat, so now I give the food to its mouth because it can’t do it alone,” he details.
At the moment it has no name. Luis prefers not to personalize it and become attached to it. “It’s better this way, it’s a wild animal and the main objective is reintegration into its habitat,” he explains.

The porcupine inhabits the Chiquitano and Amazonian forests. In the case of the recovered specimen, they tend to live alone and are nocturnal. In addition, it is normal to find them in the trees, because there they feel more protected.
Gálvez clarifies that they are not aggressive. They are not characterized by attacking. “As a defense they stand still and bristle. Only if you touch them do they drop their spines,” he says.
Together with the veterinarian, they put creams for burns on a daily basis. It is part of the treatment that she must follow. And so that the inputs are not lacking, he does not hesitate to ask for the contribution of the people. All kinds of fruits that make up the strength of their diet are also required.

Rescatan puercoespín con graves quemaduras en El Torno
Necesita unos 30 días para que las heridas cicatricen. Un biólogo mantiene la hembra puercoespín bajo vigilancia para alimentarla y supervisar su recuperación
El incendio suscitado en El Torno alarmó a muchas familias que vieron las llamas acercarse a sus casas. Brigadas de bomberos llegaron hasta el incendio para contener las llamas y resguardar la vida de las personas. En la oscuridad, mientras los sufridos voluntarios combatían el fuego, los animales silvestres trataban de huir del mismo.
No todos lo lograron. Vecinos que acudieron en apoyo a los bomberos rescataron una puercoespín (Coendou prehensilis) adulta con graves quemaduras. Se trata de una más de las muchas víctimas silenciosas que los incendios forestales dejan en nuestros campos.
El biólogo Luis Gálvez acudió al llamado de los vecinos. Tras recuperar el animal, y debido a la incomodidad de la hora (se produjo de madrugada), la llevó a su casa donde le aplicó crema de ordeño como primera medida. También buscó hidratarla y alimentarla.
Ya de día, Gálvez trasladó a la puercoespín a la veterinaria Club de mascotas. Allá, Adriana Lucía García, especialista en animales de vida silvestre, evaluó al animal.
“Tiene las patas y el vientre con quemaduras de segundo grado. También le afectaron el cuello y la cara”, comenta Gálvez por teléfono. Desde hace cuatro años se dedica al rescate de animales.
La gravedad de las quemaduras requieren un tratamiento que puede prolongarse un mes. “Por ahora, le aplicamos cremas para las quemaduras y suero fisiológico para que cicatrice las heridas”, explica. Eso requiere una atención permanente, por lo que está bajo observación en casa de Luis.
La puercoespín también necesita ayuda para alimentarse. “Está bien. Es un ejemplar fuerte. Pero esta especie sujeta la comida con sus patitas para comer, así que ahora le doy la comida a la boca porque sola no puede”, detalla.
Por el momento no tiene nombre. Luis prefiere no personalizarlo y encariñarse con él. “Es mejor así, es un animal silvestre y el objetivo principal consiste la reinserción a su hábitat”, explica.
Puercoespín rescatado en El Torno recibe tratamiento para las quemaduras
El puercoespín habita los bosques chiquitanos y amazónicos. En el caso del ejemplar recuperado acostumbran a vivir en solitario y son de hábitos nocturnos. Además, es normal encontrarlos en los árboles, pues ahí se sienten más protegidos.
Gálvez aclara que no son agresivos. No se caracterizan por atacar. “Como defensa se quedan quietos y se erizan. Solo si les tocas sueltan las espinas”, comenta.
Junto con la veterinaria, a diario le colocan las cremas para las quemaduras. Es parte del tratamiento que debe seguir. Y para que no falten los insumos, no duda en pedir la contribución de las personas. También se requiere todo tipo de frutas que componen el fuerte de su alimentación.
