Anticarcinogens in the Bolivian achachairú are identified

The most effective compounds are in the branches. Laboratory tests showed that are capable of inhibiting the growth of tumor cells of kidney, prostate and breast cancer.

2014-03-13 06.58.31 amThe achachairú, a fruit tree of Bolivian origin, was effective against certain types of cancer cells in laboratory tests conducted by scientists of the Brazilian University of Vale do Itajaí (Univali), it was reported yesterday.

The Univali researchers were able to isolate two compounds of plant extracts that, at least in the laboratory, had an effect to inhibit tumor cells in cases of prostate, breast and kidney cancer, the university said in a statement.

The discovery, made in partnership with Brazilian researchers from University of Campinas (Unicamp), was featured in an article recently published in an international scientific journal.

The achachairú (Garcinia achachairu), a very coveted fruit by the Bolivians, who use it to produce soft drinks, ice cream and edible fruit desserts, is a “new hope in the fight against cancer,” said Univali.

In Bolivia traditional medicine uses the rind of the fruit and the bark of the achachairú as healing and to treat problems such as rheumatism, inflammation , gastric disturbances and skin spots.

Despite being virtually unknown in Brazil, the fruit was already adapted to different Brazilian regions, among which is Santa Catarina state in the south, where is based Univali.

The Brazilian university research is developed within the framework of a project supported by the Ibero-American Science and Technology for Development (Cyted) to identify new therapeutic agents from the regional biodiversity.

Tests with extracts of different plant parts were made and obtained the best results with the branches, reported Univali.


The researcher Rivaldo Niero, one of the investigators says it has managed to isolate and identify two rare substances that appear to be responsible for the biological effect evidenced. He admitted that these properties, as well as its safety and toxicity, has yet to be tested in humans.

Valdir Cechinel Filho, another Univali researcher explained that studies continue on in partnership with the Cancer Research Center of the University of Salamanca (Spain).

The new phase of research with evidence in live models, attempts to elucidate the mechanisms of action of the active ingredients, said Cechinel Filho.

In Bolivia is known by several names. The Chiquitanos call ‘shashairu’ a fruit ; among the Guarani is known as ‘Pacuri’ while Guarayo call it ‘ibaguazú’. The Mojenos, however, call it ‘cachicheruqui’.
