Road blockades generate daily losses of up to US$60 million and put investments at risk, industrialists warn

The president of the National Chamber of Industries (CNI), Gonzalo Morales, also warned that the productive and logistics chain of industries is being affected, as well as the cold chain for food and medicines.

Amid the mobilizations by the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB) against Supreme Decree 5503, the president of the National Chamber of Industries (CNI), Gonzalo Morales, warned that road blockades across the country are generating daily losses of around US$60 million.

“We are just starting a new year and it is not possible that we already have announcements of marches and blockades, which negatively affect the pockets of Bolivians, national industry, and the State as a whole,” he said in an interview on Bolivia TV.

The executive also warned that the productive and logistics chain of industries is being affected, as well as the refrigeration chain for food and medicines.

“When all of Bolivia is blocked, according to the estimates we as a chamber have made, there is an impact of between 50 and 60 million dollars daily; that is the damage caused by blockades in the country,” Morales indicated.

In that context, he called on the leadership of the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB) and other sectors that have been mobilizing since Tuesday to engage in dialogue with the Government to seek a way out of the conflict.

“We believe that sincere and open dialogue should prevail among the main actors involved in this issue, and not begin with blockades, because this severely damages the image we want to change as Bolivia before the entire world,” he said.

Morales also pointed out that this type of pressure measure severely affects the country’s image and can put future investments at risk.

“When there are blockades, not only is our country’s economy harmed, but fundamentally the image and the confidence we want to give to potential new investors who may want to come to our country,” he lamented.
