Environmental disaster due to mudslide worsens in Llallagua

It was denounced that environmental liabilities continue to slide from the concentration point in Catavi.

Denouncement that the environmental disaster in Llallagua is growing

The tailings that covered the community of Andavilque (Llallagua municipality) on Sunday the 16th continue to slide from the upper area due to ongoing rains. Since these are environmental liabilities containing chemicals and minerals, there is an alarming increase in environmental damage.

Departmental Assembly member Azucena Fuertes (Puka Sunqu) denounced that more than two weeks after the environmental disaster caused by the slide of an environmental liability known as “Laguna El Kenko,” no concrete actions have been taken to stop the mudslide, which continues to advance downhill.

The water flowing through the community of Andavilque is yellow in color because it contains various harmful elements affecting the soil, animals, and people.

The complainant clarified that the Bolivian Mining Corporation (Comibol), as the entity responsible for the environmental liability, should have initiated cleanup actions in the affected area. However, no measures have been taken, not even warning signs indicating that the upper area poses a risk due to the loose material that continues to slide due to gravity and water action.

Municipal, departmental, and national authorities are not taking any action while the mud continues to flow, further degrading the land quality, endangering people’s health, and causing long-term, irreversible damage.

Fuertes is calling for a law declaring Andavilque a disaster zone to enable environmental remediation actions, as initial reports on the damage caused by the mudslide indicate an affected area of 50 kilometers.

DAMAGE

Reports from the Potosí Governor’s Office indicate that the avalanche of toxic waste has affected more than 50 kilometers downstream, leaving a devastating toll: at least 30 homes destroyed, one person dead, and dozens of animals killed.
