Bolivia with $52.5 million dollars trade deficit in 10 years of potato production

During 2016, 91% of the imported volume of potatoes and their derivatives came from Peru. The purchases were mostly fresh potatoes.

Including potatoes for sowing, fresh, fried, dehydrated, starch and potato flour, between 2010 and 2016, the trade balance of these products was deficient. In that period, imports surpassed exports with more than $52.5 million dollars, according to the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE) with data from the Ministry of Rural Development and Land and INE.

In the first quarter of 2017, the exported value of this tuber and its derivatives increased by 4%, while imports increased by 33% compared to the same period of previous year.

35% of the volume of potatoes and by-products exported had Brazil as its first destination, mainly chuño [dried potato]. Paraguay is followed by 26%, whose sales were dehydrated and fried potatoes.

During 2016, 91% of the imported volume of potatoes and their derivatives came from Peru. The purchases were mostly fresh potatoes.

Potato production has been increasing, achieving the largest production record in the agricultural year 2016-2017 with 1 million 120 thousand tons in 191 thousand hectares, at a yield of 5.9 tons per hectare.

In the agricultural year 2009-2010, the lowest production of the period studied was recorded, with 909 thousand tons in an area of 159 thousand hectares at a yield of 5.7 tons per hectare.

Bolivia consumes approximately 1.1 million tons of potatoes per year and consumption per capita is 108 kilograms.
