Reproaching the lack of will demonstrated by government authorities and the ruling party in Parliament to repeal “incendiary laws,” Community Citizens (CC) deputy, Luisa Nayar, lamented that all the damage caused by uncontrolled fires has not been enough to prioritize addressing the disaster of forest fires. This, she argued, reveals the lack of interest by the Movement for Socialism (MAS) in protecting the environment and Mother Earth.

Through her social media accounts, Nayar harshly criticized the government’s inability to resolve the forest fire emergency, despite it being a recurring issue each year, exacerbated by laws designed to benefit specific sectors.

“Ten million hectares burned, twenty million animals scorched, the economy destroyed, irreparable damage to nature, dozens of national and international flights canceled,” the assemblywoman stated.

She also regretted MAS’s unwillingness to pass environmental protection laws or to repeal the controversial “incendiary laws.”

“Meanwhile, MAS’s incompetent, corrupt, and ecocidal government continues to refuse to repeal these laws, nor do they want to pass the law to protect Pachamama against fires,” she added.

In light of this situation, the opposition legislator reiterated that the ruling party does not care about the country or its people, claiming they hate nature and only care about power and maintaining their privileges.

According to a recent report from Fundación Tierra, as of September 30th, 10,125,400 hectares have burned in Bolivia due to forest fires, a figure 90% higher than the 2019 reports, when 5.3 million hectares were consumed.
