They call to prosecute authorities for failing to prevent the environmental tragedy | Piden procesar a autoridades que no evitaron tragedia ambiental

El Diario:

Congressman Marcelo Pedrazas (CC).

Questioning why the ministries of Rural Development and Environment and Water have yet to issue the corresponding reports on a bill presented in 2023 to address the problem of forest fires, Marcelo Pedrazas, a deputy from Comunidad Ciudadana (CC), called for investigations into the crime of “failure to perform duties” against authorities who have not facilitated regulations to control uncontrolled burning and have not taken timely actions to prevent the current environmental tragedy in the country.

According to Pedrazas, the main culprits of the environmental disaster currently affecting the country are the heads of the ministries of Rural Development and Environment, who, since November 2023, have not submitted the necessary reports to enable legislation proposed to repeal Law 741, the “mother of incendiary laws.”

In this regard, he stated that the Public Prosecutor’s Office should begin an investigation into the two ministers who have thus far avoided their responsibility to issue a report on the bill to nullify the controversial regulation. “These two institutions have violated the Constitution and the regulations of the Legislative Assembly because they never submitted a report regarding this bill,” Pedrazas asserted.

For the opposition lawmaker, it is necessary for the Attorney General’s Office to begin investigations into the work of these two government bodies, in order to establish potential responsibilities that led to the out-of-control burning and forest fires this year.

“Just as investigations into those who started the fires have been announced, those who failed to take timely preventive measures to avoid the country’s greatest environmental tragedy must be investigated and prosecuted,” he stated.

Pedrazas concluded by calling for the unity of all Bolivians to prevent further environmental disasters in the future, as well as to find structural solutions to what he called “the worst environmental tragedy in Bolivia’s history.”
