Textile workers: “We are not producing; we are at zero; all the workshops have stopped” | Textileros: “No estamos produciendo, estamos cero, todos los talleres han parado”

Héctor Arratia, a textile worker, reported that they are no longer making clothing because the cost of raw materials has increased by 50%, affecting around a thousand workers. He also mentioned the government’s failure to conduct inspections where the fabric is sold.

“Unfortunately, since the price of fabric increased, we are not producing. We are at zero. All the workshops have stopped. That’s why we are out on the streets,” said Arratia, a textile worker, who was accompanied by a group of others.

The textile workers gathered outside the Ministry of Productive Development to express their frustration with the Minister of the area and the Vice Minister of Consumer Defense, Jorge Silva, for failing to follow through on their promise to conduct inspections at the wholesale commercial centers.

Arratia explained that even though they don’t buy the fabric or raw materials with dollars, the importers are telling them that they need to bring foreign currency if they want to purchase the products.

“We are giving a maximum of three days, otherwise, at a national level, we will self-organize and make decisions,” he stated.
