Mobilizations announced due to shortage of dollars in the country

  • Economists warn that the lack of the US currency will worsen this year, a situation that will have negative effects on different international trade transactions.
  • National authorities maintain that the recovery of reserves will be based on industrialization and the contribution of state companies, but for economists the situation is more complicated.
The low circulation of the US currency makes it difficult to develop different activities in the country.

Given the prolonged shortage of dollars in the national market, importers announced a mobilization, since this currency is used in different international trade transactions. The need to acquire the currency leads them to the parallel market, to buy for a value of more than 7.8 bolivianos per unit. Meanwhile, the Government maintains that the economy is going through a temporary period of low liquidity.

The president of the Association of Self-Employed Importers, Mercedes Quisbert, stated that the shortage of dollars is desperate, since it cannot be obtained in the national market.

In the parallel market the price ranges between 7.8 bolivianos to 7.9 bolivianos per dollar, and unfortunately they must resort to foreign currency to acquire inputs from abroad.

Given this situation, they announce that they will hold a sector assembly in which they will determine measures to take to demand the Government to regularize the sale of dollars in the national market at the official price.

The authorities of the economic sector maintain that Bolivia is going through a temporary period of low dollar liquidity, but with the start-up of industrial plants and the import substitution program this moment will be overcome.
