Faced with fuel crisis

In 18 years of the MAS in power, the economy was not restructured

  • The crisis caused by fuel shortages once again distresses Bolivians, since the country did not adopt an economic model with a sustainable productive matrix.

Questioning that after almost 18 years of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) in power, with speeches and promises about “living well” through an economy based on anti-capitalist values, there is once again talk of a crisis due to a shortage of hydrocarbons, the representative for Comunidad Ciudadana (Citizen Community – CC), Alejandra Camargo, regretted that the current administration tries to cover up errors by blaming external factors.

“It is almost as if two decades of being in power have meant absolutely nothing, we return to the point where we were when Morales entered the presidency: dependent on a finite resource linked to mining and at the mercy of fluctuations in international markets and prices,” said the assemblywoman.

In Camargo’s opinion, an ideal scenario would have been the adoption of a resilient economic model, with a sustainable productive matrix, but the issue “seems to have never been on the priority agenda for Morales or Arce.”

Likewise, she questioned that there is currently an attempt to cover up “a monumental error,” blaming external factors such as wars, or a subsidy law issued by previous governments, when the reality is that during the years of the MAS in power no work was done in restructuring the economy.

“The neglect is outrageous, and even more so if it is not recognized, if it is riddled with corruption, nepotism and it is about looking for scapegoats or culprits when facing reality and looking for solutions,” she said.

In that sense, the opposition representative regretted that, once again, the population has been left “adrift” and with the burden of having to find a way to slow down and lead to a possible crisis from this carelessness. “Once again the chieftains have failed us,” she concluded.

The hydrocarbon crisis has worsened in recent months due to several factors, among which the lack of foreign currency to pay off the debt that the State has with suppliers and smuggling stands out.
