Amparo Carvajal, symbol of courage

Activists and platforms defending democracy carried out various acts of celebration of the six years of 21F, when Bolivia said No to the re-election of Evo Morales in the 2016 referendum, and the most rude, savage and barbaric chapter occurred in La Paz, when MAS militants cowardly attacked the president of the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights (APDH), Amparo Carvajal.

The images are eloquent: knowing that a concentration of citizen platforms would take place in that place to remember 21F, MAS shock groups arrived there to try to prevent the acts, harass and attack the citizens who made use of their right to think different and freely express their ideas.

Who make up these shock groups? On several previous occasions it has been shown that they are public officials and MAS militants who receive precise instructions and a cash payment to go out and attack: they were seen yesterday in Plaza Abaroa, and the previous week they were at the gates of the Miraflores jail to not let former president Jeanine Áñez go to a hospital to receive medical attention as a judge had ordered.

In the case of the attack on Amparo Carvajal, the masista shock groups were not even bothered by the condition of a woman who is 82 years old, who has difficulty walking and has to do so with the help of a cane and the assistance of a person who to lean on. Shouting “Where were you damn Amparo!”, “Assassin”, “Coup doer”, cowardly men and women of equal status threw eggs and indolently harassed a woman who was barely able to walk while two of her collaborators tried to protect her. How easy it is to camouflage oneself among the masses and feel very “macho” against an 82-year-old woman, physically tiny, but great in value! Faced with this harassment without measure, the Police exhibited without blushing their indifference and complicity with the violent groups of the MAS; they did nothing and let the harassment continue as if it were not their obligation to stop those angry men and women who the only thing missing was to strike out against the humanity of Mrs. Carvajal.

Is that the extreme of servility of the Bolivian National Police that is incapable of doing anything when it comes to MAS protesters? If the members of the entity called to protect order and the rights of people against violent actions have lost their ability to react to defend a citizen who is not from the government party, then the country has lost its National Police, which will sadly have become the repressive arm of the MAS.

What the violent groups of the MAS did not count on is that they would find a truly brave woman, with a recognized democratic vocation and defense of the unprotected. When many of those aggressors were not even born, Amparo Carvajal was fighting against the dictatorships of Hugo Banzer, Luis García Meza and others in the 1970s and 1980s.

“We are not afraid, and if we are, we put up with it because it is our right,” she said in the midst of the barbaric harassment. And she has shown it that way every time she needed it. Amparo Carvajal is the symbol of the right to dissent, to fight for democracy and human rights. The country has in her a Bolivian who does not give up. Looking at her is admiring her and observing that in the midst of so much darkness, hope appears with her.

Activistas y plataformas defensoras de la democracia realizaron diversos actos de celebración de los seis años del 21F, cuando Bolivia dijo No a la reelección de Evo Morales en el referéndum de 2016, y el capítulo más grosero, salvaje y bárbaro se produjo en La Paz, cuando militantes del MAS agredieron cobardemente a la presidenta de la Asamblea Permanente de Derechos Humanos (APDH), Amparo Carvajal.

Las imágenes son elocuentes: conociendo que en aquel lugar se desarrollaría una concentración de las plataformas ciudadanas para recordar el 21F, grupos de choque del MAS llegaron allí para intentar impedir los actos, acosar y agredir a los ciudadanos que hacían uso de su derecho a pensar diferente y a expresar libremente sus ideas.

¿Quiénes integran esos grupos de choque? En varias ocasiones anteriores se ha demostrado que se trata de funcionarios públicos y militantes del MAS que reciben instrucciones precisas y un pago en efectivo para salir a agredir: se los ha visto ayer en Plaza Abaroa, y la anterior semana estaban en las puertas de la cárcel de Miraflores para no dejar que la expresidenta Jeanine Áñez saliera a un hospital a recibir atención médica como había ordenado un juez.

En el caso de la agresión a Amparo Carvajal, los grupos de choque masistas ni siquiera se inmutaron por la condición de una mujer que tiene 82 años, que tiene dificultad para caminar y tiene que hacerlo con ayuda de un bastón y la asistencia de una persona en quien apoyarse. Al grito de “¡Dónde estabas Amparo carajo!”, “Asesina”, “Golpista”, hombres cobardes y mujeres de igual condición lanzaron huevos y acosaron indolentemente a una mujer que apenas lograba caminar mientras dos colaboradores suyos intentaban protegerla. ¡Qué fácil es camuflarse entre la masa y sentirse muy “machos” contra una mujer de 82 años, diminuta físicamente, pero grande en valor! Frente a ese hostigamiento sin medida, la Policía exhibía sin ruborizarse su indiferencia y complicidad con los grupos violentos del MAS; no hicieron nada y dejaron que el acoso continuara como si no fuera su obligación detener a esos hombres y mujeres enardecidos a los que lo único que les faltó fue emprender a golpes contra la humanidad de la señora Carvajal.

¿Ese es el extremo de servilismo de la Policía Nacional de Bolivia que es incapaz de hacer nada cuando se trata de manifestantes del MAS? Si los efectivos de la entidad llamada a resguardar el orden y los derechos de las personas frente a acciones violentas han perdido su capacidad de reacción para defender a un ciudadano que no es del partido de Gobierno, entonces es que el país ha perdido a su Policía Nacional, que habrá pasado a convertirse tristemente en el brazo represor del MAS.

Con lo que no contaban los grupos violentos del MAS es que se encontrarían con una mujer auténticamente valiente, de reconocida vocación democrática y de defensa de los desprotegidos. Cuando muchos de esos agresores ni habían nacido, Amparo Carvajal estaba peleando contra las dictaduras de Hugo Banzer, Luis García Meza y otros en las décadas de 1970 y 1980.

“No tenemos miedo, y si lo tenemos lo aguantamos porque es nuestro derecho”, decía ella en medio del acoso bárbaro. Y así lo ha demostrado cada vez que hizo falta. Amparo Carvajal es el símbolo del derecho a disentir, de pelear por la democracia y los derechos humanos. El país tiene en ella a una boliviana que no se rinde. Mirarla es admirarla y observar que en medio de tanta oscuridad, con ella asoma la esperanza.
