Kudos for USAID’s golden anniversary! Fifty years helping the whole world.
In case you didn’t know, USAID/Bolivia funded a great variety of infrastructure across our beautiful Bolivia: did you know about: the road La Paz – Oruro? how about the airports in most of the lowlands, like Guayaramerin, San Borja, San Jose de Chiquitos; or the old airports of Cochabamba, La Paz, Santa Cruz? and what about the road Cochabamba – Chapare? and the list goes on and on… if you stop at the bridges in between Locotal and Ivirgarzama, you will see commemorating plates with the famous handshake. Who put electricity in Aiquile? and let’s not forget about potable water and sewage systems, the list is endless. It was in the early 90s that USAID had decided to forgone the credit projects and all became grants. Unlike other donors, they made sure local people got involved, trained, never gave out the keys of a facility and then abandon that project. Once, I remember witnessing $200 MM dollars worth of heavy road construction equipment, laying in a place for years, brand new and never used, the departmental government did not have th funding to operate that machinery, well USAID stepped in and provided those operational costs.
USAID was instrumental to many projects in health, education, agriculture, environmental management, etc. Kudos to them one more time, and thank you for helping Bolivia!
