Tsimane Indigenous People Give 24 Hours for Mining Companies to Leave the Maniqui River | Indígenas Tsimanes dan 24 horas para salida de empresas mineras que operan en el río Maniqui

By ANF, Eju.tv:

The Grand Tsimane Council gave a 24-hour deadline for illegally operating mining companies to leave; during an inspection, dredges were observed in the Maniqui River in the department of Beni.

“A dredge was seen working in the Maniqui River, and that has caused us concern. That’s why we’re giving the workers 24 hours to leave. If the dredge remains in the river, we will proceed with its confiscation,” said Indigenous leader Maguin Gutiérrez.

That decision was made at an emergency meeting held in recent days, after a delegation of Indigenous people confirmed the presence of dredges and heavy machinery operating in the area.

Gutiérrez warned that they will take legal and direct action if the companies do not cease operations. He also denounced that outsiders are pretending to be Indigenous leaders and are granting permits to exploit minerals in that tributary.

“We’ve seen many people moving up the upper part of the river. Unfortunately, these so-called leaders are issuing contracts and permits to operate. We are going to file a denouncement against those who gave that contract to Mr. Adolfo,” he stated.
