The Bolivian Society of Pneumology has proposed declaring a health alert due to the environmental pollution present in several cities, caused by forest fires and “chaqueos” (slash-and-burn practices).

In a statement, the organization labeled the chaqueos as “an attack on public health” and demanded that those responsible “be sanctioned according to the current national legislation.”

The entity added that this situation recurs annually, representing a “risk to the lives of the country’s inhabitants.” It also warned that the pollution poses a “potential danger in the short, medium, and long term.

In recent days, air quality has worsened due to fire outbreaks reported in various municipalities. The sky over La Paz has been shrouded in smoke for the third consecutive day, giving the landscape a gray tint. On Tuesday at noon, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the city reached 192, classified as “very bad,” the highest level recorded this year.

The situation is similar in other departments. Last week, flights were suspended at airports in Cobija, Trinidad, and five airstrips in Santa Cruz municipalities due to the thick smoke from forest fires.

Santa Cruz has been the most affected by wildfires in recent months, with authorities identifying 43 fires in 12 municipalities as of last week.

In its statement, the Bolivian Society of Pneumology recommended the use of face masks again, especially for people at risk, such as those with bronchopulmonary diseases. It also suggested using air purifiers in enclosed spaces and avoiding outdoor activities. (Brújula Digital)
