The MAS playing on another court
The crisis of representation throughout the political spectrum (both in the ruling party and in the opposition), marks the exhaustion of a relatively long cycle that began after the collapse of the previous political system, around the year 2000. The Movement towards Socialism, which was the main protagonist of that cycle, it no longer has anything to offer the country and languishes making its last, probably most dangerous, shakes. The political, regional and citizen oppositions have not so far been able to escape this end of the cycle, hit by long wear and tear.
What we have to ask ourselves today is whether we are also facing the end of the democratic cycle that began with supreme efforts in 1982. The latest political events unfortunately indicate that this seems to be the case. The judicial coup perpetrated by the Government with the extension of the judicial authorities is the culmination of a series of openly anti-democratic actions, starting with the loss of the government parliamentary majority.
In the other corner of masismo, an Evo Morales, wounded and cornered by a devastating judicial ruling, seems to be betting on disaster, initiating an escalation of convulsion aimed at destabilizing and eventually overthrowing his dolphin’s Government. In his current legal circumstances, he knows that his margins of action are narrow, and he seems to have decided to kick the board. After me, the deluge.
Although it is true that the Morales, the García Lineras, the Arces and the entire long list of Masistas never had a genuinely democratic spirit, for a long time they were able to maintain some forms and travel the route of authoritarianism disguised as democratic legality. They used democracy but never exercised it with real conviction. The years of overwhelming electoral support and economic chaos (both in the past) allowed them a thousand and one impostures, but now they are already playing on another field, which has very little to do with the democratic system.
Everything also indicates that they have decided to finish annihilating democracy, knowing that it is dangerously weakened at a global level, while autocratic capitalist regimes and extreme right-wing governments emerge that do not hesitate to undermine the democratic foundations of the West. Without going any further, what can we expect if the Americans themselves are about to throw overboard one of the most robust democratic systems in the world.
The survival of the rule of law and democratic rights is of great concern to the few of us who continue to believe that politics (with all its defects) is the only and best way to resolve the challenges of this new world order in the making, but It does not seem to sufficiently affect an electorate more concerned with survival and the commitment to the relentless economic model, no matter what and at any price.
The next political and electoral dilemmas that citizens will face do not seem to be the same as in 2019, in which democracy versus authoritarianism had to be defined. The Government probably makes the same reading and has therefore decided to take a one-way leap into the openly anti-democratic camp. It remains to know then if it is not only democracy that is in question, but also the maturity and political consciousness of the people.
El MAS jugando en otra cancha
La crisis de representación en todo el espectro político (tanto en el oficialismo como en la oposición), marca el agotamiento de un ciclo relativamente largo que se inició luego del derrumbe del sistema político anterior, alrededor del año 2000. El Movimiento al Socialismo, que fue el principal protagonista de ese ciclo, ya no tiene nada que ofrecerle al país y languidece dando sus últimas sacudidas, probablemente las más peligrosas. Las oposiciones políticas, regionales y ciudadanas tampoco han podido hasta ahora sustraerse de este fin de ciclo, golpeadas por un largo desgaste.
Lo que hoy cabe preguntarse es si también estamos hoy frente al fin del ciclo democrático iniciado con supremos esfuerzos en 1982. Los últimos acontecimientos políticos indican lamentablemente que así parece ser. El golpe judicial perpetrado por el Gobierno con el prorrogazo de las autoridades judiciales es el remate de una serie de acciones abiertamente anti democráticas, a partir de la pérdida de la mayoría parlamentaria gubernamental.
En la otra esquina del masismo, un Evo Morales herido y acorralado por un fulminante fallo judicial, parece estar apostando por el desastre, iniciando una escalada de convulsión dirigida a desestabilizar y eventualmente tumbar al Gobierno de su delfín. En sus actuales circunstancias jurídicas, sabe que sus márgenes de acción son estrechos, y parece haber decidido patear el tablero. Después de mí, el diluvio.
Si bien es cierto que los Morales, los García Lineras, los Arces y toda la larga lista de masistas nunca tuvieron un espíritu genuinamente democrático, pudieron durante mucho tiempo guardar algunas formas y transitar por la ruta de un autoritarismo maquillado de legalidad democrática. Se sirvieron de la democracia pero nunca le ejercieron con real convicción. Los años de aplastantes apoyos electorales y de jauja económica (ambos en el pasado) les permitieron una y mil imposturas, pero ahora están ya jugando en otra cancha, que muy poco tiene que ver con el sistema democrático.
Todo indica también que han decidido terminar de aniquilar la democracia, sabiendo que ésta se encuentra peligrosamente debilitada a nivel global, mientras surgen los regímenes autocráticos capitalistas y los gobiernos de extrema derecha que no dudan en socavar los cimientos democráticos de occidente. Sin ir más lejos, qué podemos esperar si los mismísimos norteamericanos están a punto de tirar por la borda uno de los sistemas democráticos más robustos del mundo.
La supervivencia del Estado de derecho y de los derechos democráticos nos preocupan de sobremanera a los pocos que seguimos creyendo que la política (con todos sus defectos) es la única y la mejor manera de resolver los desafíos de este nuevo orden mundial en ciernes, pero no parece afectar suficientemente a un electorado más preocupado en la supervivencia y en la apuesta del implacable modelo económico, a como dé lugar y a cualquier precio.
Las próximas disyuntivas políticas y electorales que enfrentará la ciudadanía no parecen ser las mismas de 2019, en las que se debía definir democracia versus autoritarismo. El Gobierno hace probablemente la misma lectura y por lo tanto ha decidido dar un salto sin retorno al campo abiertamente antidemocrático. Resta saber entonces si ni es solamente la democracia la que está en entredicho, sino también la madurez y la conciencia política de la gente.
