In the last seven months, Bolivia has witnessed the relentless and authoritarian hand of the State, directed against opposition leaders and human rights activists. It is alarming to see how democracy and respect for fundamental rights are being overwhelmed by the Movement for Socialism (MAS), which seeks to annihilate its opponents to consolidate its power.
A clear example of this situation is the case of the governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, who was elected by popular vote but is currently behind bars in the Chonchocoro prison. His family has repeatedly denounced the violation of his rights and suspicions intensified after the dissemination of a heartbreaking photo in which he appears emaciated and thin. Camacho’s health is in grave danger due to the lack of adequate medical care and his isolation in prison.
It is unacceptable that a person’s access to health be restricted, regardless of political issues. Camacho suffers from underlying illnesses that require specialized care and it is imperative that he be allowed to receive the necessary medical assistance without hindrance. Denying him visits and medical care puts his life at risk and exposes the cruel practices of the prison system under the MAS government.
But the arbitrariness of the MAS was not limited there. The human rights activist, Amparo Carvajal, has spent 50 days in a vigil in the open air after being stripped of the headquarters of the Permanent Assembly of Human Rights of Bolivia by people related to the government discourse. The attacks and harassment of Carvajal are clear evidence of how the MAS seeks to silence any dissident voice and silence those who fight for justice and democracy in the country.
This worrisome situation is not isolated, but part of a systematic pattern of repression and political persecution carried out by the MAS to eliminate any opposition and consolidate its hegemony. We see how opposition leaders face an endless series of trials and difficulties in exercising their rights, while activists and defenders of Human Rights are subjected to inhuman and violent treatment.
It is time for the international community to pay attention to what is happening in Bolivia and support those who fight for democracy and respect for fundamental rights. International organizations must reach their voice in defense of the life and integrity of opposition leaders who are hostages of the MAS dictatorship.
The MAS must cease its authoritarian and dictatorial attitude, allow access to medical care and guarantee due process for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.
En los últimos siete meses, Bolivia ha sido testigo de la implacable y autoritaria mano dura del Estado, dirigida hacia líderes opositores y activistas defensores de los Derechos Humanos. Es alarmante ver cómo la democracia y el respeto a los derechos fundamentales están siendo avasallados por el Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), que busca aniquilar a sus opositores para consolidar su poder.
Un claro ejemplo de esta situación es el caso del gobernador de Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, quien fue elegido por voto popular pero actualmente se encuentra tras las rejas en el penal de Chonchocoro. Su familia ha denunciado en múltiples ocasiones la vulneración de sus derechos y las sospechas se intensificaron tras la difusión de una desgarradora foto en la que aparece demacrado y delgado. La salud de Camacho está en grave peligro debido a la falta de atención médica adecuada ya su aislamiento en la cárcel.
Es inaceptable que se restrinja el acceso a la salud de una persona, independientemente de cuestiones políticas. Camacho sufre de enfermedades de base que requieren atención especializada y es imperativo que se le permita recibir la asistencia médica necesaria sin obstáculos. Negarle visitas y atención médica pone en riesgo su vida y expone la crueldad de las prácticas del sistema penitenciario bajo el gobierno del MAS.
Pero las arbitrariedades del MAS no se limitaron allí. La activista por los Derechos Humanos, Amparo Carvajal, lleva 50 días en una vigilia a la intemperie después de ser despojada de la sede de la Asamblea Permanente de Derechos Humanos de Bolivia por personas afines al discurso gubernamental. Las agresiones y hostigamientos hacia Carvajal son evidencia clara de cómo el MAS busca acallar cualquier voz disidente y silenciar a quienes luchan por la justicia y la democracia en el país.
Esta preocupante situación no es aislada, sino parte de un patrón sistemático de represión y persecución política llevada a cabo por el MAS para eliminar cualquier oposición y consolidar su hegemonía. Vemos cómo los líderes de la oposición enfrentan una serie interminable de juicios y dificultades para ejercer sus derechos, mientras que activistas y defensores de los Derechos Humanos son sometidos a tratos inhumanos y violentos.
Es hora de que la comunidad internacional preste atención a lo que está sucediendo en Bolivia y respalde a aquellos que luchan por la democracia y el respeto a los derechos fundamentales. Los organismos internacionales deben alcanzar su voz en defensa de la vida y la integridad de líderes opositores que son rehenes de la dictadura masista.
El MAS debe cesar su actitud autoritaria y dictatorial, permitir el acceso a la atención médica y garantizar el debido proceso para todos los ciudadanos, sin importar su afiliación política.
