British pensioner Rod Keates burnt alive in Bolivia after falling into boiling mud near geyser

screen-shot-2016-11-11-at-10-51-31-amA British pensioner has died on holiday in Bolivia after he fell into boiling hot liquid mud and was burnt alive.

The 71-year-old retired magistrate was photographing geysers in the south American country when he fell into the scorching mud pool.

Rod Keates, who lives in Billesden, Leicestershire, screamed for help and was rescued by other tourists, but died on the way to the hospital.

He had been on a walking trip and had gone out early in the morning when the tragic accident happened.

Friend David Mills, also 71, said Mr Keates was an “explorer by nature” and a “very generous and kind person”, the Daily Mail reported.

“He went out on his own to photograph the geysers on Saturday morning and obviously got too close,” Mr Mills said.

“There’s a hard crust on the surface but liquid mud underneath, and it’s really hot.

“Immediately the others heard him cry out and they helped him out, but sadly he died on his way to hospital.”

Mr Keates has a wife, Pat, three daughters and five grandchildren.

Pete Bruning, who took part in charity bike rides with Mr Keates, paid tribute to the “super chap”.

“We were all shattered and we can’t get our minds around the fact he won’t be coming home from South America.

“He was always wanting to go to exotic places – he wanted to see as much of the world as he could.”

Geysers are present near volcanos when magma heats rocks and water underground starts to boil.

The area around the geysers is also so hot, meaning nearby mud boils.
