Bolivian indigenous rights were violated; CONAMAQ to the UN

A rep from CONAMAQ (Consejo Nacional de Ayllus y Markas del Qullasuyu- the National Council of the highlands people, it grabs the name of one of the States in the Inca Empire, the Qullasuyu or Kollasuyo, where most of Bolivia is now), that representative went to the UN offices in Geneva, Switzerland to denounce current Bolivian government for violating indigenous rights regarding the road that intends to go through the TIPNIS, said of CONAMAQ’s leaders, David Crispin.

“This issue we are denouncing to the United Nations, we have a representative from CONAMAQ who travelled to Geneva, today in the morning he is there, taking this and other documents to brief them,” stated Crispin to Red Unitel (TV).

The CONAMAQ will be watchful in different roads of the country, in support of the indigenous march, and rejecting government’s actions to start road construction inside the TIPNIS.

The Guarani people is currently blockading the road from Camiri to Santa Cruz, that is the route to Argentina. Decision to blockade in support of the TIPNIS was also as a result that one vehicle carrying food and supplies to the marching group, over the weekend was stopped in Yucumo by the settlers.

Chances are that there will be more blockades starting all over the country as there is no visible solution between the government and the TIPNIS people.

TOMAS CONDORI, of Indian Council of South America, said that the Indian Council of South America had contributed to the Declaration on Indigenous People and criticized its non-binding nature. Indigenous communities in the Bolivian Amazon were suffering from the lack of international protection and the violation of their right to self-determination, enshrined in the constitution of Bolivia. They had embarked on a march to protest against the building of a highway that would cause harm to the environment and their territory; however, they faced pressure groups and had been smeared and criminalized by the Government and the police had been ordered to halt the march.
