A new decree allowing private companies to import fuel puts an end to the monopoly on diesel and gasoline supply. In Santa Cruz, 55 service stations are already preparing their storage tanks to market both products and expect to begin sales during the first days of August.

The manager of the Fuel Retailers Association (Asosur), Susy Dorado, explained that citizens will now be able to choose between fuel imported by Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) and fuel brought into the country by private importers.

In this regard, she noted that the sector is awaiting regulations from the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH), which will establish the requirements and conditions that each service station must meet in order to sell the product.

“We hope those regulations are issued as soon as possible, within the 15-day period established by the decree,” she said. “According to our estimates, the National Hydrocarbons Agency should issue its resolution no later than July 22.”

“Therefore, we expect that during the first days of August—let’s say August 6 as a target date—we will begin marketing the new product to all customers.”

Price

YPFB’s subsidized gasoline currently sells for Bs 6.96 per liter, but fuel imported by private companies will be sold at a higher and variable price, depending on international market conditions, Dorado said.

In that regard, she explained that “for the first time we will have fluctuating prices.”

“We will no longer have a fixed price as we currently do with diesel and gasoline, which are regulated prices and are exclusively under the authority of the National Hydrocarbons Agency,” she stated.
