In the face of irregular arrests

  • The citizen group Sovereignty and Freedom warns that “Bolivia is heading down a dangerous path of democratic regression”;
  • meanwhile, former Ombudsman Waldo Albarracín maintains that the government seeks to dismantle any unified opposition project.
Lawyer Jorge Valda was taken to police offices.

In light of irregularities denounced in the arrests of lawyer Jorge Valda and others implicated in an alleged coup conspiracy, the citizen group Sovereignty and Freedom (Sol.bo), through an official statement, warns that “Bolivia is heading down a dangerous path of democratic regression” in which repression and manipulation have replaced dialogue and truth.

The group considers Valda’s arrest in Santa Cruz not only unfounded but also “a worrying act of intimidation and a violation of due process.” In this regard, they demanded that the State put an end to this “authoritarian offensive,” given that the instrumental use of justice “weakens institutions and destroys public trust.”

Political scientist Franklin Pareja believes that society—both politicians and intellectuals—must understand that Bolivia is definitely living under a totalitarian regime.

Former Ombudsman Waldo Albarracín warned that the government’s plans to fragment the opposition are progressing, now with the intention of positioning emerging political figures to eliminate any possibility of a unified opposition project. [Opinion of Bolivian Thoughts: Waldo is mistaken, he stirs up controversy and casts unnecessary doubt; it is precisely emerging figures who should lead the unified opposition project.]

On the other hand, the Minister of Justice, César Siles, referred to the recent arrests of alleged participants in the events of June 26, 2024, stating that due process and legal guarantees have been upheld.
