Different entities in Potosí held protest marches this Monday in defense of the department’s lithium reserves. This comes amid controversy over two contracts with Chinese and Russian companies, which are currently awaiting approval in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly.

In the morning, faculty and administrative staff from the Tomás Frías Autonomous University (UATF) marched, while in the afternoon, it was the turn of the opposition Civic Committee of Potosí (Comcipo).

The university’s rector, Pedro López, requested access to the contract details to conduct thorough technical analyses.

He recalled that in the past, they had already requested an explanation of the technology proposed by the bidding companies for lithium extraction, but their request was denied due to a confidentiality clause.

In the second march, Comcipo’s president, Alberto Pérez, stated that the civic group is in a state of emergency in opposition to the contracts.

The mobilizations were triggered after the Economy Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved the lithium contract with the Chinese company CBC on Friday, despite requests from Potosí activists to postpone its discussion.

“These damn contracts must not be signed and must not be approved in the National Assembly. On Friday, the worst injustice was committed against the people of Potosí by approving these contracts, which are clearly a business deal for the government,” Pérez lamented.

He considers the 3% royalty rate for the region an insult to Potosinos. “We want to tell Mr. Luis Arce Catacora, and we’ve said it many times: lithium belongs to Bolivia, damn it! Not to his family,” the civic leader told Radio Líder.
