Banks have long imposed limits on the use of the U.S. dollar, but now this measure also applies to bolivianos. Customers can no longer access their savings based on their needs but rather according to the cash availability of the bank, and those affected lament the lack of an institution to protect them from the actions of certain financial entities.

“I am on vacation in Salta, Argentina. I have been a client of BCP (Banco de Crédito Popular) for 15 years. Before leaving Bolivia, I completed the necessary steps to use my debit card in Salta. Everything was approved. Here in Salta, I tried to use my card, and it was declined. I contacted BCP, and their response was that despite having 5,000 bolivianos in my account, the spending limit is 205 bolivianos per month,” wrote a client affected by the bank’s decision.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Financial System Supervision Authority (ASFI) and its representatives, but there was no response to the customer’s concerns.

Although ASFI officials stated in a press conference last year that there is no “corralito,” in practice, a “disguised corralito” is being implemented by limiting the use of savings in foreign currency, which now also applies to bolivianos abroad.

Last year, the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) provided around 700 million dollars in foreign currency to the financial system, a significantly lower amount than in previous years.
