The indigenous march protesting against illegal settlements reached the community of Carmen de Ruiz, in the department of Santa Cruz, this Sunday.

“We have been welcomed with great support in Carmen de Ruiz, and this makes the march passing through each town even more historic,” said Lordy Suárez, chief of the San Simón community.

Twelve communities from the Chiquitania and Upper and Lower Paraguá regions are rejecting illegal settlements and accusing pro-MAS intercultural groups, agribusinesses, and Mennonites of land invasions, deforestation, and harm to wildlife in protected areas, as well as starting forest fires.

More than 170 volunteer marchers arrived in Carmen de Ruiz, carrying banners, flags, and accompanied by traditional music from their region.

The march began last Monday from the community of San José de Campamento and is expected to cover 162 kilometers to the provincial capital, San Ignacio de Velasco.
