Hoteliers explain that they must pay bills in dollars every month. They warn that a significant portion of tourists book through these platforms.

The shortage of dollars in the country is complicating various sectors, including the hotel industry, which, due to the lack of foreign currency for digital transactions, may find it difficult to showcase their businesses on platforms where foreigners can make reservations.
Jorge Emilio Vaca, president of the Hotel Chamber, stated that their sector is in a state of emergency and that the inflow of reservations through digital platforms and websites could be at risk.
“I estimate that about 40% of the reservations that hotels in Bolivia receive come through these intermediary websites, which we have to pay at the end of the month in dollars. With restrictions in the financial system, it becomes impossible for us to pay the bills, meaning that in the short term, we may not be able to be present on these sites, and foreigners won’t be able to book the hotels,” said Vaca.
The hotel sector emphasizes that tourism brings foreign currency into the country, so there needs to be a solution to the dollar shortage problem.
“Costs are in dollars, paid at the official exchange rate. When they pay in dollars, it goes to an account, and we receive it in bolivianos, and we’re already losing out. There’s loss everywhere,” explained the representative of the hotel sector.

La falta de dólares en el país complica a diversos sectores, uno de ellos es el rubro hotelero, que por no contar con la divisa para hacer transacciones digitales pueden quedarse sin mostrar sus negocios en plataformas para que extranjeros puedan realizar reservas.
Jorge Emilio Vaca, presidente de la Cámara Hotelera, señaló que su rubro está en emergencia y que el ingreso de reservas por plataformas y páginas digitales puede verse en riesgo.
“Estimo que un 40% de las reservas que entran a los hoteles en Bolivia entran a través de estas páginas intermediarias, a las que tenemos que pagar a finales de mes en dólares. Al tener restricciones en el sistema financiero nos hace imposible pagar las facturas, implica que en un corto plazo no podamos estar presentes en las páginas y los extranjeros no puedan reservar los hoteles”, dijo Vaca.
El sector hotelero apunta a que el turismo trae divisas al país por lo que debe haber una solución a los problemas de la falta de dólares.
“Los costos están en dólares, se paga al tipo de cambio oficial. Cuando pagan en dólares eso se va a una cuenta, nos dan en bolivianos, y ya estamos perdiendo. Hay pérdida por todo lado”, expuso el representante del sector hotelero.
