The Association of Airlines of Bolivia (ALA) and the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) expressed their concern to the government on Thursday regarding the shortage of dollars in the national economy, which affects the operations of this sector.

“We address your authority with the purpose of expressing the deep concern that affects the sector we represent due to the lack of US dollars for the commercialization of airline tickets, a practice that is internationally used in this activity,” reads the letter addressed to the Minister of Economy, Marcelo Montenegro.

In the letter, the two associations explain that, for more than a year, the sector has been reinventing measures to mitigate the impact of the currency shortage.

Among them, they cited, for example, accepting a higher percentage of sales in Bolivianos, assuming the increase in commissions for remittances abroad up to 30% depending on the bank, and containing the social unrest of the direct service chain and those indirectly linked to the activity, such as travel agencies, tourism operators, hotels, gastronomy, crafts, and others.

In the note, they point out that the country has not yet recovered its pre-pandemic levels in terms of connectivity, being 21% below the 2019 connectivity levels.

The problem of the dollar shortage has persisted since March 2023, when the Central Bank of Bolivia began selling the currency to the public through tokens and set schedules.

Currently, the situation has worsened because a parallel market has emerged where the US dollar is sold above 10 Bolivianos, while the issuing entity reiterates that the official exchange rate is 6.96 Bolivianos.
