Santa Cruz: Armed invaders take over the El Encanto property, and Del Castillo warns of a strong hand

This would be the fourth time that community members have tried to take over these lands as their own. Owners fear for crops and livestock. Police did not intervene due to bad weather.

At least 50 armed individuals invaded the El Encanto property in the town of Ascensión de Guarayos, Santa Cruz, early on Thursday morning. The property owners, transporters, and the police attempted to enter the area today, however, the invaders met them with gunfire.

This happened in the afternoon, one person was injured, and two people were kidnapped. This would be the second time that community members have tried to take over these lands as their own, reported Samuel Yucra, one of the affected by the forced takeover; he fears for the situation of the crops and the livestock.

“Yesterday morning, around 6:00, these well-armed groups appeared and entered, trampling all the defenses we put up to protect the property. There were three of them, one was injured and another disappeared. Our crops and livestock are at risk, and we are surrounded, we don’t know what we are going to do,” lamented Yucra in contact with Red Uno.

The El Encanto property, located 40 kilometers from Ascensión de Guarayos and 35 kilometers from the highway, was already invaded on November 8, 2023.

According to Yucra, those who invaded the lands were the same people from the first invasion, who claim they are “recovering their property,” as they warned.

“There are about 40 people, led by three individuals. They are from the Única, the same ones who evicted us last year, on November 8, to recover ‘their property’ according to them,” he recounted.

Grecia Yucra, another affected party, expressed concern about the crops. “If we can’t harvest, we won’t get anything because they are in the camp,” lamented Grecia Yucra.

Bad weather prevented deployment

With the roads flooded by rain, the Bolivian Police could not enter the El Encanto property. The departmental police commander, Erick Olguin, confirmed this situation.

“We tried to enter the area; unfortunately, it was raining, and the road is muddy, which made it impossible for the police to enter,” said Holguín.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Government, Eduardo Del Castillo, confirmed Colonel Holguín’s version and warned of imprisoning those who intimidate the rightful owners of the lands. He stated that there are already conversations with the landowners.

“We have received a preliminary report from the departmental commander Erick Olguín, in which they have been able to communicate with the owners of El Encanto. Unfortunately, the weather conditions do not allow us to enter this place; however, we are talking to the landowners, and we will prevent the invaders from trying to intimidate the legitimate landowners; and if anyone dares to exceed their conduct beyond the legal framework, they will face jail,” he warned.
