The scarcity of dollars persists in the city of La Paz, while its price in the parallel market remains at 8.40 bolivianos, despite the agreement reached three weeks ago between the government and private businesses to stabilize the US currency in the country.

Brújula Digital conducted a tour of 11 currency exchange houses located on Loayza, Colón, Mariscal Santa Cruz, and Mariscal Grau streets, in downtown La Paz. It was found that only three of them had dollars available for sale, while the others still did not have the currency.

Selling prices range from 8.35 to 8.40 bolivianos, with the latter being the highest recorded, despite the official exchange rate being 6.96 bolivianos. Regarding purchases, values range from the official exchange rate of 6.86 bolivianos to 8.30 bolivianos.

The Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) reported that, since the start of the bond sale on February 27, more than 22 million dollars in bonds have been sold until a few days ago. These funds aim to strengthen Net International Reserves (NIR) and support the country’s economy.

In terms of distribution by department, La Paz leads with 60.4%, followed by Cochabamba with 24.6%. Santa Cruz represents 9.3%, while Chuquisaca and Potosí each have a 1.7% share. Meanwhile, Oruro has 1.2%, Tarija has 1.0%, and Pando has 0.2%.

At the end of February, the Ministry of Economy and Finance and private entrepreneurs agreed on a set of 10 measures to address the shortage of dollars in the country.

Among the measures are the release of exports with expedited procedures, immediate refund of Tax Refund Certificates (CDIMs), dispatch of bonds from the Central Bank of Bolivia in dollars, auction of diesel to large buyers, and expediting the import of diesel for private companies for self-consumption.
