After learning of a statement issued by the Ministry of Economy in which public sector entities are instructed to apply austerity measures to “precaute financial stability,” the senator for the Citizen Community (CC), Andrea Barrientos, pointed out that the waste of resources during the governments of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) force the current administration to take measures that should have been assumed from the beginning.

The instructions released on Tuesday mandate rationalizing and/or reducing expenses without affecting the functioning of state entities. Among the measures to be assumed is the reduction of expenses for travel expenses, tickets, consumer goods and services, transportation, advertising and dissemination, as well as the use of cell phones and the renewal of vehicles to what is strictly necessary.

It is also suggested to reduce printing services, opting for the dissemination of publications through digital platforms.

For Senator Barrientos, these measures respond to the delicate economic situation that the country is going through, a product of an irresponsible administration during the years of the MAS in power.

“The waste of the MAS has plunged us into a deep economic crisis. Serious governments take action from the first moment. This measure shows the serious crisis we face,” she said.

The instructions of the Ministry of Economy also urge state entities to comply with Supreme Decree 27327, issued in 2004 by the government of Carlos Mesa, with the purpose of implementing austerity in public administration.

From his social networks, Mesa described the measure as late but appropriate, and assured that austerity must be a permanent norm for all governments because the resources that are administered belong to the people and not to the parties.

“In 2004 we decided to implement it as a public policy that we maintained until the end. The government’s decision to resume this rule, although late, is appropriate,” said the former president.
