End of the road. Letter to the readers of Página Siete
“This is a hard moment that fills me with sadness and anguish because I am aware that independent journalism and democracy are losing an important ally”
After 13 years of independent journalism at the service of society and democracy, Página Siete publishes its latest edition today. The explanation is as simple as it is painful: our expenses are higher than our income and after exhausting all the instances to get working capital, we run out of financial resources to continue operating.
A combination of adverse circumstances created what we could call a perfect storm, which led us to this situation:
- The government party systematically blocked the advertising schedule for the newspaper, despite the fact that it is financed with resources from all Bolivians. They even pressured private companies in the financial system so that they do not publish their notices on Página Siete.
- The ruling party launched a structure of public harassment through social networks against the newspaper, which to date has gone unpunished.
- Audits and recurring fines from a variety of State institutions were merciless year after year against Página Siete, while our pro-government line competitors were treated with a white glove.
- The unfounded judicial harassment led to the blocking of my bank accounts and the seizure of my assets, which limited my ability to act.
Apart from the harassment of power against this independent newspaper, there are other reasons that force its closure:
- The COVID pandemic changed people’s news reading habits, causing a sharp drop in the sale of print newspapers, which decreased our revenues.
- The economic crisis in the country reduced the advertising budget of many companies, which reduced the financial flow of the newspaper.
- And, to top it off, the international price of paper and other printing supplies increased as a result of the war in Ukraine.
- Although Página Siete bet this year on attracting digital subscribers, its growth was slower than expected.
The list could go on, but with what has been said it is clear that we are facing a dead end.
Faced with this difficult situation, the company’s shareholders have made significant capital contributions, up to the limit of our capacity, in recent years. I myself resorted to personal bank loans to cover essential expenses, such as the payment of Christmas bonuses and others.
We recently tried to get a significant capitalization that would have allowed us to get ahead, but investors backed off at the last minute for fear of political retaliation.
For all of the above, we have decided to suspend the publication of Pagina Siete from today. From now on, the procedure established by the Commercial Code and the applicable legal regulations for these cases will be strictly followed, which gives priority to the payment of owed wages and social benefits of our workers, whom we thank for their commitment and resistance.
With all my heart, I thank our readers for the trust received during all these years. Each of you has made Página Siete a strong and influential brand, although uncomfortable for power.
This is a hard moment that fills me with sadness and anguish because I am aware that independent journalism and democracy are losing an important ally.
Unfortunately, this is a responsible decision that I could not stop making.

Fin del camino. Carta a los lectores de Página Siete
“Este es un momento duro que me llena de tristeza y angustia porque soy consciente de que el periodismo independiente y la democracia pierden un aliado importante”

Después de 13 años de periodismo independiente al servicio de la sociedad y la democracia, Página Siete publica hoy su última edición. La explicación es tan simple como dolorosa: nuestros gastos son superiores a los ingresos y después de agotar todas las instancias para conseguir capital de trabajo, nos quedamos sin recursos económicos para seguir operando.
Una combinación de circunstancias adversas creó lo que podríamos calificar como una tormenta perfecta, que nos llevó a esta situación:
• El partido de Gobierno bloqueó sistemáticamente la pauta publicitaria para el periódico, pese a que ella se financia con recursos de todos los bolivianos. Incluso presionó a empresas privadas del sistema financiero para que no publiquen sus avisos en Página Siete.
• El oficialismo puso en marcha una estructura de hostigamiento público por redes sociales contra el periódico que hasta hoy está impune.
• Auditorías y multas recurrentes de una diversidad de instituciones del Estado se ensañaron año tras año contra Página Siete, mientras nuestros competidores de línea oficialista fueron tratados con guante blanco.
• El acoso judicial infundado derivó en el bloqueo de mis cuentas bancarias y el embargo de mis bienes, lo que limitó mi capacidad de acción.
Aparte del acoso del poder contra este diario independiente, existen otras razones que obligan a su cierre:
• La pandemia de COVID cambió los hábitos de lectura de noticias de la gente, generando una fuerte caída en la venta de periódicos impresos, lo que disminuyó nuestros ingresos.
• La crisis económica del país redujo el presupuesto publicitario de muchas empresas, lo que redujo el flujo financiero del periódico.
• Y, para colmo, el precio internacional del papel y otros insumos de impresión se incrementó por efecto de la guerra en Ucrania.
• Si bien Página Siete apostó este año a la captación de suscriptores digitales, su crecimiento resultó más lento de lo esperado.
La lista podría continuar, pero con lo dicho queda claro que estamos ante un callejón sin salida.
Frente a esta difícil situación, los accionistas de la empresa efectuamos importantes aportes de capital, hasta el límite de nuestra capacidad, durante los últimos años. Yo mismo recurrí a créditos personales en la banca para cubrir gastos esenciales, como el pago de aguinaldos y otros.
Recientemente, intentamos conseguir una capitalización importante que nos hubiera permitido salir adelante, pero a último momento los inversores dieron un paso al costado por temor a represalias políticas.
Por todo lo expuesto, hemos decidido suspender la publicación de Página Siete desde hoy. En adelante, se seguirá estrictamente el procedimiento establecido por el Código de Comercio y la normativa legal aplicable para estos casos, el cual otorga prioridad al pago de sueldos adeudados y beneficios sociales de nuestros trabajadores, a quienes agradecemos por su compromiso y resistencia.
De todo corazón, agradezco a nuestros lectores por la confianza recibida durante todos estos años. Cada uno de ustedes ha hecho de Página Siete una marca fuerte e influyente, aunque incómoda para el poder.
Este es un momento duro que me llena de tristeza y angustia porque soy consciente de que el periodismo independiente y la democracia pierden un aliado importante.
Lastimosamente, esta es una decisión responsable que no podía dejar de tomar.
