The Voices of Madidi come out of the jungle and are heard in France
Iga Vandenhove collected sounds from the North La Paz Protected Area between July and August last year. The 33-year-old Frenchwoman made a sound documentary that is presented in Europe.
Sometimes the squirrels make a sound that is similar to that of a fully running engine… a boat engine. Of those small boats that cross the rivers of the Bolivian Amazon.
Listening and differentiating sounds of nature is almost a gift, knowing the jungle is a privilege. Iga Vandenhove is gifted and she is privileged. The 33-year-old Frenchwoman toured part of Parque Madidi last year and gathered the sounds of the forest. She returned to her native country and managed to edit the material to make a sound documentary. Currently this artistic record is available at a French festival and, in addition, it is possible to find Iga’s material on the web.
It’s just over 23 minutes in which nature shows its best face, the one that can be heard thanks to the imagination with Las Voces del Madidi performed by the French Vandenhove.
Bolivia
The Madidi National Park is one of the 22 protected areas that Bolivia has. It is located in the north of La Paz and is one of the last intact reservoirs on Earth. In 1.9 million hectares, it is home to more species than the entire Amazon: 10% of the world’s birds, 6.8% of butterflies, 4% of mammals and 3% of the planet’s plants. In addition, there are species that do not exist in other parts of the world and others that are threatened.
Iga between July and August of last year was in Apolo, Santa Cruz del Valle Ameno, Ichuramada; She navigated the Tuichi river, reached Rurrenabaque and continued along the Bala, Parabal and Ixiamas rivers. She learned to blend into the jungle and knew how to listen to its sounds.
At all times, she received the collaboration of the Bolivian park rangers, especially Marcos Uzquiano, who helped her learn, by ear, a little more about this Bolivian region. Another fundamental character in her work was Huáscar Sevillano Coronel.
“Without them I would not have been able to do this job. Basically we were filming and going on patrol for a month in the jungle”, explains the Frenchwoman.
France
Already in her native land, Vandenhove dedicated herself to classifying the material. She did it calmly and it took between two and three months to order the sounds. In less than a month she had her piece edited and ready for presentation.
“The work has been chosen to participate in a festival, in a garden, in a field two hours from Paris. It’s there until November and it’s nice that they listen to the sounds of Madidi in France”, explained Iga. It is on billboard from September 18 to November 13.
The Festival L’Atelier des empreintes is the stage in which Iga’s work is presented. And it is part of the theme The tree and the forest. “It promotes the defense of access to culture for all… to cultivate and exercise their critical sense, to discover other ways of looking at the world”, refers to the entity’s electronic portal.
In addition, two festivals in France are also interested in disseminating the artistic piece.
The sound piece was also presented in the city of La Paz. It was at the Barranco Cultural Center, in the South zone, on Thursday, September 22; her work was accompanied by pieces by visual artists.
“It is a success that The voices of Madidi are heard in France”, says Iga. She explains that the public was surprised by the diversity of sounds. “There were some who had traveled to South America and remembered the sensations they had when they visited the country.” The sound sample takes place in Montsoreau, a couple of hours from Paris.
One of the objectives of the work was to make known the beauty of the region; but there is also concern about the eventual loss of these natural treasures.
“Today we must fight to enforce environmental rights, care for the environment, ecology and the environment. There are threats of mining and depredation. The piece can lead to sensitizing people around these issues”, says Iga.
Sopocachi
For October 14, it is intended to make a new presentation at the French Alliance, in which the sounds of northern La Paz will be heard and the graphic work of the La Paz artist Knorke Leaf will also be appreciated.
The virtual invitation states: “Las Voces del Madidi is an exceptional three-day event that brings together two women artists from France and Bolivia to present a visual and experiential sound piece on the importance of conservation of the Madidi Amazon National Park, a place with the greatest biodiversity. of the world and the important work of park rangers for their protection”.
In social networks there is a fundraising campaign to support the project, which until now is a personal impulse, but which is already known in Bolivia and France. There is the possibility of making presentations in other scenarios.
Those who want to listen to Las Voces del Madidi can also do so from any mobile device.
Thus, the artistic piece is heard near and far. You can hear howler monkeys, the songs of frogs, alligators, birds… and the park rangers who are the mediators of the tour. Everyone tells the secrets of the Bolivian jungle and its call for help.
In the skin of the forest
Parisian Iga Vandenhove is a sound, visual, plastic and documentary artist. She works between France and the countries where she takes her projects. She was in Iran and Armenia among other nations.
She is interested in the relationship between urban and natural contexts, collective and personal myths, the border between reality and fiction, social and environmental issues. Her art is often made from field recordings where adventure becomes creative stuff and comes with a participatory approach. Her work has been mentioned in national and international media and festivals.
Recently, Iga is interested in telling what happens in Ixiamas. It is a project that she develops with Clarivel Loayza, who is an anthropologist, archaeologist, actress and storyteller.
Both met in Ixiamas. “We met last year and we connected very strongly. We realized that we have the same intention of talking about the forest and seeing how it communicates with us”, says Iga.
Last year they started the idea of a documentary and between May and June the project was shaped. The subject was then sent to the French school L’école documentaire de Lussas, which approved the plan so far called Forest Skin.
This documentary questions the mining that destroys the forest and the indiscriminate felling of wood. The Jichis are present in the work, mythological beings who are guardians of the lowlands of Bolivia.
In a mixture of magical realism and myths, the story of the jungle and its coexistence with humans is told.
In addition, La Piel del Bosque tells the story of Don Guido (photo), who in his childhood walked from Puerto Maldonado to Ixiamas accompanied by his blind grandfather, and Clarivel, the woman who today is committed to mining that eliminates mercury from mining.

Iga Vandenhove recolectó los sonidos del Área Protegida del norte de La Paz entre julio y agosto del año pasado. La francesa de 33 años realizó un documental sonoro que se presenta en Europa.
A veces las ardillas hacen un sonido que es similar al de un motor en pleno funcionamiento… un motor de lancha. De esas embarcaciones pequeñas que cruzan por los ríos de la Amazonia boliviana.
Escuchar y diferenciar sonidos de la naturaleza es casi un don, conocer la selva es un privilegio. Iga Vandenhove tiene un don y es privilegiada. La francesa de 33 años recorrió parte del Parque Madidi el año pasado y reunió los sonidos del bosque. Volvió a su país natal y logró editar el material para hacer un documental sonoro. En la actualidad este registro artístico está disponible en un festival francés y, además, es posible encontrar el material de Iga en la web.
Son poco más de 23 minutos en los cuales la naturaleza muestra su mejor rostro, aquel que se puede escuchar gracias a la imaginación con Las Voces del Madidi que realizó la francesa Vandenhove.
Bolivia
El Parque Nacional Madidi es una de las 22 áreas protegidas que tiene Bolivia. Se encuentra en el norte de La Paz y es uno de los últimos reservorios intactos de la Tierra. En 1,9 millones de hectáreas, alberga a más especies que toda la Amazonia: al 10% de las aves del mundo, a 6,8% de mariposas, al 4% de mamíferos y al 3% de las plantas del planeta. Además allá se encuentran especies que no existen en otras partes del mundo y otras que están amenazadas.
Iga entre julio y agosto del año pasado estuvo en Apolo, Santa Cruz del Valle Ameno, Ichuramada; navegó por el río Tuichi, llegó a Rurrenabaque y siguió por el río Bala, el Parabal e Ixiamas. Aprendió a mimetizarse en la selva y supo escuchar sus sonidos.
En todo momento recibió la colaboración de los guardaparques bolivianos, especialmente de Marcos Uzquiano, quien le ayudó a conocer, de oído, un poco más de esta región boliviana. Otro personaje fundamental en su trabajo fue Huáscar Sevillano Coronel.
“Sin ellos no hubiera logrado hacer ese trabajo. Básicamente estuvimos grabando y yendo de patrullaje durante un mes por la selva”, explica la francesa.
Francia
Ya en su tierra natal, Vandenhove se dedicó a clasificar el material. Lo hizo con calma y tardó entre dos y tres meses para ordenar los sonidos. En menos de un mes tuvo editada su pieza y lista para su presentación.
“La obra se ha escogido para participar en un festival, en un jardín, en un campo a dos horas de París. Está allá hasta noviembre y es lindo que escuchen en Francia Los sonidos del Madidi”, explicó Iga. Está en cartelera desde el 18 de septiembre hasta el 13 de noviembre.
El Festival L’Atelier des empreintes es el escenario en el cual se presenta la obra de Iga. Y es parte del tema El árbol y el bosque. “Promueve la defensa del acceso a la cultura para todos… para cultivar y ejercitar su sentido crítico, para descubrir otras formas de mirar el mundo”, refiere el portal electrónico de la entidad.
Además, dos festivales en Francia también están interesados en difundir la pieza artística.
En la ciudad de La Paz también se presentó la pieza sonora. Fue en el Centro Cultural Barranco, de la zona Sur, el jueves 22 de septiembre; su obra fue acompañada por piezas de artistas visuales.
“Es un éxito que se escuche Las voces del Madidi en Francia”, cuenta Iga. Explica que el público quedó sorprendido con la diversidad de sonidos. “Hubo algunos que habían viajado a Sudamérica y se acordaron de las sensaciones que tuvieron cuando visitaron el país”. La muestra sonora se realiza en Montsoreau, a un par de horas de París.
Uno de los objetivos de la obra fue hacer conocer la belleza de la región; pero también existe preocupación por la eventual pérdida de estos tesoros naturales.
“Hoy hay que luchar para hacer respetar los derechos ambientales, cuidar el medioambiente, la ecología y el entorno. Hay amenazas de minería y depredación. La pieza puede conllevar a sensibilizar a la gente alrededor de estos temas”, refiere Iga.
Sopocachi
Para el 14 de octubre se pretende hacer una nueva presentación en la Alianza Francesa, en la cual se escucharán los sonidos del norte paceño y también se podrá apreciar la obra gráfica de la artista paceña Knorke Leaf.
La invitación virtual indica: “Las Voces del Madidi es un evento excepcional de tres días que une a dos artistas mujeres de Francia y Bolivia para presentar un pieza sonora visual y vivencial sobre la importancia de conservación del Parque Nacional Amazónico Madidi, lugar de mayor biodiversidad del mundo y la importante labor de los guardaparques para su protección”.
En redes sociales hay una campaña de recolección de fondos para apoyar el proyecto, que hasta ahora es un impulso personal, pero que ya se hace conocer en Bolivia y en Francia. Existe la posibilidad de hacer presentaciones en otros escenarios.
Quienes quieren escuchar Las Voces del Madidi también pueden hacerlo desde cualquier dispositivo móvil.
Así, la pieza artística se escucha cerca y lejos. Se oyen monos aulladores, cantos de ranas, caimanes, aves… y los guardaparques que son los mediadores del recorrido. Todos cuentan los secretos de la selva boliviana y su llamado de auxilio.
En la piel del bosque
La parisina Iga Vandenhove es una artista sonora, visual, plástica y de documental. Trabaja entre Francia y los países donde le llevan sus proyectos. Estuvo en Irán y Armenia entre otras naciones.
Se interesa por la relación entre los contextos urbanos y naturales, los mitos colectivos y personales, la frontera entre lo real y la ficción, temas sociales y medioambientales. Su arte es a menudo hecho de grabaciones de terreno en donde la aventura se vuelve materia creativa y viene con un enfoque participativo. Su trabajo ha sido mencionado en medios de difusión nacionales, internacionales y festivales.
En el último tiempo, Iga se interesa por contar lo que sucede en Ixiamas. Es un proyecto que elabora con Clarivel Loayza, quien es antropóloga, arqueóloga, actriz y cuentacuentos.
Ambas se conocieron en Ixiamas. “Nos encontramos el año pasado y conectamos muy fuerte. Nos dimos cuenta que tenemos la misma intención de hablar del bosque y ver cómo se comunica con nosotros”, refiere Iga.
El año pasado comenzaron la idea de un documental y entre mayo y junio se dio forma al proyecto. Luego se envió el tema a la escuela francesa L’école documentaire de Lussas, la cual aprobó el plan denominado hasta ahora Piel de bosque.
Este documental cuestiona la minería que destroza al bosque y la tala indiscriminada de madera. En la obra están presentes los Jichis, seres mitológicos que son guardianes de las tierras bajas de Bolivia.
En una mezcla de realismo mágico y mitos se va contando la historia de la selva y su convivencia con los humanos.
Además, en La Piel del bosque se cuenta la vida de Don Guido (foto), quien en su niñez caminó desde Puerto Maldonado hasta Ixiamas acompañado de su abuelo ciego, y Clarivel, la mujer que hoy en día apuesta por una minería que elimina el mercurio en su explotación.
