Screen Shot 2015-01-17 at 2.40.40 PMTo overcome the shortfall in food production that has Cochabamba, the Government announced yesterday that it will invest approximately $362.2 million dollars between 2015 and 2020.

“We’re going to double food production by about 5 million tons per year,” said the departmental secretary of Planning, Filemon Iriarte.

To achieve the objective revealed that the region bet on drip irrigation, deepening of mechanization in agriculture and raise the level of performance for each hectare of agricultural production.

“We will improve the productivity of yield per unit area planted and will leverage, better, manpower,” said Iriarte.

To this end, he reiterated that “irrigation will be the best ally in two directions: extending the area under cultivation at approximately 95,000 hectares and mechanization” he said.

Currently, 90 percent of irrigation of cultivated areas is done through the traditional system of flood damage and what brings no benefits, said Iriarte.

With the plan in place, what we will change radically is the way of irrigation. “It will apply sprinkler systems and drip” he said.

Based on this work proposal to address the problems facing the region with food production, says Iriarte until 2025, Cochabamba will enable approximately 64,000 additional hectares of crops to produce more and better quality.

“We will promote the producing areas of the region,” he promised.
