The largest seism in 10 years in Bolivia was reported Wednesday July 23, 2014 in Potosi
A seism of a magnitude 5.5 occurred this Wednesday [07/23/2014] in southwest Bolivia, the highest in over 10 years, but without causing personal or property damage, reported this Thursday [07/24/2014] the private Observatorio San Calixto (OBS).
The telluric movement was detected at an intermediate depth, 100 km, and occurred at 17:39 local time (21h39 GMT), at Daniel Campos Province, Potosí department, near the border with northern Chile, reported the OBS.
“This (5.5 earthquake) is one of the most high in recent years, although it depends on the intensity of its occurrence,” as told to the AFP, by Percy Aliaga, San Calixto Observatory analyst.
The specialist explained that “the 5.5 magnitude seism was recorded 100 kilometers deep and was not felt by people” in the Bolivian Andes.
He recalled that recorded in Bolivia Cochabamba (center) in May 1998, two consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 5.6 and 6.8, “although the intensity was eight, while yesterday (Wednesday) was one of intensity “.
“The intensity measured how people felt or objects moved,” he said.
The earthquake of 1998, the worst recorded in Bolivia, caused more than 50 deaths and nearly totally destroyed 400 houses, damaging another 700.
