Fundación PRO 21 and Centro Lápiz en Mano, institutions that work with children with Down syndrome, denounced that on Monday, May 18, a group of Ponchos Rojos attacked a minibus transporting several of these children.

“These individuals threw a large stone at the minibus, shattering one of the windows and placing the physical safety of the children inside at serious risk, all of them with Down syndrome,” the foundation stated in a communiqué.

The children were returning to their therapy sessions in a school vehicle when the incident occurred. According to the complaint, the group of Ponchos Rojos surrounded the vehicle in an aggressive manner, intimidated the children, and one of them suffered a hand injury and wounds to the face.

“When attempts were made to identify those responsible, they fled. As an institution that works daily for the well-being and inclusion of this vulnerable population, we publicly denounce this grave act, which not only constitutes material damage, but a direct attack against the safety and lives of our children,” the communiqué added.

Both institutions demanded an immediate investigation from the authorities and requested guarantees to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Violence

On Monday, clashes took place in downtown La Paz between police officers and demonstrators from several sectors, including the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), the Ponchos Rojos, and factory workers, who are demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz.

The demonstrators attempted to break through the police barricade near Plaza Murillo, which led to confrontations.

In addition, acts of vandalism and assaults were reported. Members of the Ponchos Rojos intercepted another public transport minibus, forcibly entered the vehicle, and assaulted passengers, causing fear among women and children.

Attacks against pedestrians and journalists were also reported.

The demonstrators forcibly entered the La Paz Departmental Court of Justice, where they caused damage and removed documents, chairs, and desks to burn them in the streets.

According to the Bolivian Police, 11 officers were injured and nearly one hundred people were detained in connection with these events.
