The United Kingdom government announced a $7 million investment to support the conservation of nearly 4 million hectares of Bolivia’s forests, with priority intervention in Santa Cruz, Pando, and Tarija.

The project, framed within the Darwin Initiative, seeks to improve the state of conservation through innovative financial mechanisms, institutional strengthening, and greater territorial governance, benefiting local communities, indigenous peoples, and biodiversity.

According to a press release, this is the largest Darwin Initiative project worldwide.

The announcement was made during the dialogue “Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation: Unlocking Financing for Bolivia’s New Forest Agenda,” being held on April 28 and 29 in Santa Cruz.

“Investing in forests, biodiversity, and climate resilience is investing in economic security, jobs, and real opportunities for people,” stressed United Kingdom deputy head of mission Zeno Van Den Hoek during the opening of the event.

The meeting brings together authorities, investors, and cooperating institutions with the goal of aligning the country’s climate priorities with financing opportunities for forests, within the framework of the vision of a green and sustainable Bolivia.

The initiative is being driven by the government, with support from the British Embassy, Fundación Natura, the Governors’ Climate and Forests Taskforce, the Forestry Chamber, and the Forest and Land Social Control and Oversight Authority (ABT).

The Darwin Initiative is a British government grant program that provides resources to low- and middle-income countries to conserve biodiversity, reduce poverty, and confront climate change.
