The church of Curahuara de Carangas, known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano” for its colonial murals, will be restored with $66,240, funds provided by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. The project will last approximately six months. The temple is located in Sajama province, in the department of Oruro.

“This temple is not only beautiful; its architectural style and interior murals tell the story of Bolivia, and we want to protect it to share it with the world. This project marks more than 26 years of cooperation in protecting Bolivia’s cultural heritage. It is a way to strengthen the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between our peoples, working together not only on restoration, but also in combating the illicit trafficking of cultural heritage objects,” said the U.S. chief of mission, Debra Hevia.

The diplomat participated in the presentation of this initiative at the Vice Ministry of Cultures, an event also attended by the bishop of the Diocese of Oruro, Monsignor Cristóbal Bialasik.

During the presentation of the project, the Vice Minister for Tourism Promotion, Andrés Aramayo, thanked architect Josefina Mata, Bishop Cristóbal Bialasik of the Diocese of Oruro, and Hevia for launching this initiative.

“As the Ministry of Sustainable Tourism, Cultures, Folklore and Gastronomy, we see culture as a driver of our national pride, of our essence, but also of the cohesion and social peace that we so greatly need in order to truly understand where we come from and where we want to go,” the vice minister stated.

Restoration experts will conduct a comprehensive analysis of the temple’s current condition, including detailed photographic documentation, damage assessment, and a review of previous interventions.

They will also study the historical and architectural value of the monument in order to understand its context, construction techniques, and function over time. Damage caused by the passage of time, natural factors, and human intervention will be repaired, restoring the temple’s original form, color, and texture.

This project—according to an official statement—is part of the Freedom250 celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, which throughout 2026 honors American history and strengthens regional partnerships through initiatives such as this one.

The church of Curahuara de Carangas is a monument of great historical, architectural, and cultural importance for Bolivia. It was declared a National Monument in 1960; this temple is one of the most representative examples of Bolivian colonial architecture. Its construction dates back to the 18th century, and its value lies not only in its structure but also in the artistic elements it houses, such as mural paintings and the gold-leaf altarpiece.

The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation is a program of the Department of State that supports the preservation of cultural heritage in developing countries around the world. Since its creation in 2001, it has funded more than 1,000 projects in over 130 countries, providing direct grants for the restoration of historic sites, the preservation of museum collections, the conservation of manuscripts and ancient documents, and the protection of traditional forms of cultural expression such as music, dance, and languages. In Bolivia, this fund has financed projects since 2001, with a total value of more than two million dollars.
