The executive director of Sernap, Cecilia Miranda, described the intervention as an unprecedented event in at least 20 years

An interinstitutional operation led by the National Service of Protected Areas (Sernap) managed to enter Parque Nacional Carrasco, where it confirmed illegal settlements, deforestation, and unauthorized crops in one of the most sensitive zones of the protected area, marking the effective return of the State after more than two decades of absence.

The intervention was carried out on February 10 in the so-called 360° Polygon, within the Colomelín Protection District, by order of the Agro-Environmental Court of Entre Ríos, in response to an eviction lawsuit over the seizure of state lands. During the operation, the existence of homes and extensive crop areas installed without authorization inside the park was documented.

The deployment mobilized 22 specialists from Sernap, the National Institute of Agrarian Reform (INRA), the Agro-Environmental Court, and a contingent of the Bolivian Police, equipped for riot control and protection of technical personnel.

According to Tomás Calahuma, director of Carrasco National Park, access to the critical points required overcoming complex logistical challenges, such as crossing the swollen Colomelín River in a motorized canoe known as a “peque peque.” Once in the intervened area, the technical sweep confirmed significant environmental damage.

“Excess coca plantations were identified, along with a variety of crops such as coffee, cacao, copoazú, citrus fruits, cassava, corn, and rice, demonstrating a drastic change in land use within an area that should be strictly protected,” Calahuma explained.

The operation also incorporated aerial technology to strengthen the inspection. Through the use of high-capacity drones, technicians were able to identify from the air deforested areas and severe alterations to the ecosystem. This information was documented and submitted as evidence to the corresponding judicial authorities.Sernap ingresa al corazón del parque Carrasco y frena avasallamientos

For her part, the executive director of Sernap, Cecilia Miranda, described the intervention as unprecedented in at least 20 years. “The presence of the State in historically vulnerable territories is key to stopping new environmental crimes and recovering strategic areas for conservation,” she stated.

The authority emphasized that, despite the complexity of the terrain and the sensitivity of the conflict, the operation concluded without incidents, leaving in the hands of the courts the necessary evidence to move forward with eviction proceedings and the restoration of the protected area.

Carrasco National Park is considered one of the country’s most important ecological lungs due to its biodiversity and its function as a biological corridor. Authorities do not rule out new interventions in the area, while environmental restoration actions and permanent monitoring are being evaluated to prevent future land seizures.Sernap ingresa al corazón del parque Carrasco y frena avasallamientos
