Site preparation for the construction of a 5 MW geothermal pilot plant has kicked off for the Laguna Colorada geothermal project in the Andes of Bolivia.

In a note on LinkedIn, a Project Director for Spanish Sacyr announces that preparation work has started on the pilot plant for the Laguna Colorada geothermal project in the Andes of Bolivia.

Located at Campo Sol de Manana at an elevation of almost 5,000 meters above sea level, it is the country’s first geothermal project being kicked off.

A joint venture between EPC contractor Sacyr from Span and Ormat Technologies won the bid for the development of a 5 MW pilot plant at Laguna Colarada in March 2019, as we reported.

Development got delayed a bit through some logistical challenges on getting the equipment to the site and the pandemic. But it is fantastic to see the project now kicking off. The Bolivian power company ENDE, as developer, plans to further develop the geothermal site for a larger plant going forward.

In many ways, the project is very similar to the Cerro Pabellon geothermal power plant in similar conditions in the Andes of Northern Chile.
