They Propose a Referendum on an “Anti-Blockade” Regulation | Plantean referendo para normativa “antibloqueos”

The road blockades called by the COB have caused significant losses in the country in recent weeks.

In the face of threats from leaders of the Bolivian Workers’ Center (COB), the national assemblyman for La Paz, Carlos Alarcón, proposed that the “anti-blockade” law be submitted to the sovereign people through a referendum, since he sees union leadership seeking to continue kidnapping Bolivia with criminal and delinquent practices aimed at maintaining privileges and perks.

The legislator also warned about the illegitimate and arbitrary stance of union leaders who claim to represent the citizenry, when measures such as road blockades in practice amount to the kidnapping of the population itself, with the purpose of extorting the State administration — a situation that has been constant over recent decades in the country.

“If the anti-blockade law wins approval via referendum, then that becomes a binding decision for the president to promulgate it. If, on the contrary, the sectors that respond to this union leadership were to win, then the law would be left without effect,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Santa Cruz, Monsignor René Leigue, questioned the blocking of highways and city streets, warning that these measures directly affect people unrelated to the conflicts and do not contribute to finding solutions for the country. He pointed out that speaking in the name of the entire population to justify these actions is not the most appropriate course.
