The former Hydrocarbons Minister warned that Bolivia’s gas cylinder crisis will directly affect millions of families. In Santa Cruz, seven out of ten households still depend on LPG, but distributors are operating at barely 15% of their capacity.

Former Hydrocarbons Minister Álvaro Ríos warned that the growing shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Bolivia could lead to a major social crisis, similar to those experienced in other countries in the region.

Ríos recalled that, according to the latest Population and Housing Census, 65% of households in Santa Cruz —and up to 70% in urban areas— rely on LPG for cooking. “In Venezuela, in mid-sized cities, people ended up cooking with firewood, breaking up furniture to light fires in the middle of the street. That’s what 21st-century socialism brings. That could be the impact of LPG in Bolivia,” he said in a television interview.

The former minister warned that the country faces two major risks in the energy sector. “The first time bomb is diesel, but the second is LPG, because it directly affects families who need to cook their meals every day. That’s where we will face another huge social bomb that will explode in the face of the next government,” he stressed.

His warning coincides with complaints from the Santa Cruz Departmental Chamber of LPG Distributors, which recently revealed that companies are operating with only 15% of their cylinders in good condition, leading to long lines, delivery delays, and the emergence of black markets.

“Without containers, gas cannot be distributed. Today there are more than one and a half million cylinders out of use that YPFB has not replaced in two decades,” distributors warned at the time.

In his analysis, Ríos blamed the governments of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) for the energy crisis. “This is the result of 20 years of mismanagement by the MAS, particularly by President Arce, who has run the economy recklessly,” he said.

Finally, he urged presidential candidates to prepare immediate responses to the problem. “The two upcoming candidates must be ready to solve the LPG issue, because it is another time bomb left to us by the MAS,” he concluded.
