Former Hydrocarbons Minister Álvaro Ríos expressed concern over the fuel crisis Bolivia is going through and criticized the Government’s response, pointing out that Vice Minister of Industrialization Luis Siles’ statement about normalizing diesel supply in October is “an aberration.” He warned that the country faces an almost complete shortage.

The former minister said the fuel crisis will not only affect the productive sector, but also the distribution of food and other essential goods. “There are people who need to move their goods from one place to another, and transportation is also tremendously concerned,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Ríos said the next government will face a titanic task to resolve the energy crisis and will need to bring in “a lot of cash” to supply the country with fuel and pay debts to providers.

“The next government has to come in with $5 billion to resolve the first year of its term, only in the energy sector, so that the country’s situation can normalize,” he estimated.

Finally, the former minister criticized the Arce administration for leaving behind a “minefield” for the next government and for failing to address the structural problems that led to the current crisis.

“What we will inherit is a very harsh situation in energy matters, which translates into a deterioration of our productive system,” he stated.

Ríos called on the current president of Bolivia to prioritize fuel purchases and stop the propaganda about his economic model.

“The Government says it is leaving behind a wonderful country, with reserves and discovered fields, which is completely false,” he said.

A statement from the Government and sector authorities on the former official’s remarks is expected.
