By El Mundo:

PRODUCTION. Bolivian cacao is highly valued in the international market for its quality and flavor, with exports concentrated in the Netherlands (37%), followed by Germany (21%) and Argentina (13%). Eighty percent of tree cultivation is concentrated in the department of La Paz. In the local market, it is used in the chocolate industry, which produces value-added products.

Bolivian cacao is increasingly sought after in international markets such as Argentina, Germany, and the Netherlands, thanks to its quality and flavor. According to data from the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE), it is a non-traditional export product that generates foreign currency revenues for the country.

However, cacao exports have declined, though it remains a crop with great potential, as it is ranked among the best in the world.

Gary Rodríguez, general manager of IBCE, reported that according to the latest figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE), by June 2025 exports of cacao and cacao preparations amounted to around 4 million dollars, representing a 47% drop compared to the same period in 2024, when they exceeded 7.3 million dollars.

In terms of volume, cacao and cacao preparation exports by June 2024 totaled 2,319 tons, while in the same period of 2025, only 396 tons were exported.

According to IBCE data, in the first half of 2025, 37% of cacao and cacao preparation exports went to the Netherlands, followed by Germany (21%) and Argentina (13%). This highlights the product’s ability to position itself in the demanding European market.

In the local market, it is used in the chocolate industry, which produces value-added products. Although highly demanded, families dedicated to cacao face challenges in its harvesting.

Prices in the external market

The average international cacao price reached 7.37 dollars per kilogram as of July 2025, slightly above the average recorded in 2024, when it stood at 7.33 dollars per kilogram — a 4% increase compared to the same period last year. In 2024, the highest price in history was recorded at 7.33 dollars per kilogram, after more than a decade when the international average hovered around 3 dollars per kilo.
