Dollar Falls on Parallel Market, but Prices Remain High | Dólar en mercado paralelo baja, pero los precios se mantienen

By El Diario:

Despite the continued decline of the U.S. dollar on the parallel market, most products that saw price hikes when the dollar rose have not decreased in cost.

This situation worries consumers, as key goods remain expensive.

Some senators have welcomed the drop in the foreign currency’s value on the black market but criticized ongoing speculation and the persistently high prices. They are calling for stronger price controls.

“Municipal governments have the important task of enforcing price controls,” said Senator Santos Ramos.

He also criticized mayors for not fulfilling their role in regulating prices. “Here in La Paz, I haven’t seen any controls anywhere… there have been cases of hoarding, hiding products and then releasing them for sale — this should be handled by the city authorities, but they’re not acting,” he said.

Meanwhile, merchants argue that although the dollar has dropped, prices haven’t because “we imported goods at those rates… maybe prices will fall later.”
