Potosí’s Corpus Christi Traditions Defy the Current Crisis

Largas filas ayer para enviar encomiendas con repostería potosina.

Long lines yesterday to send parcels with Potosí’s traditional pastries. [A childhood best friend spent over two hours to send an “encomienda.” God bless his heart!]

Corpus Christi is celebrated in a special way in Potosí, where once again it has been shown that traditions endure despite the economic crisis. Even with high prices for basic goods, families in Potosí have continued to buy traditional seasonal pastries, which are not only consumed within the region but—once again—have been sent to other parts of the country.

In anticipation of the holiday, Potosí’s traditional bakers prepared tawa tawassopaipillas, and chambergos, despite the rising cost of ingredients.

Because of this, families placed their orders days in advance or inquired about when sales of the traditional Potosí treats would begin.

Yesterday, for example, Bolívar Street saw long lines of people buying and picking up these products—proof that families had set aside money specifically for this purchase.

But the Potosí tradition doesn’t only endure in the Imperial City. Families also bought their traditional pastries to send to relatives in other regions of the country. Evidence of this could be seen in the long lines outside parcel offices, all with a common feature: sopaipillaschambergos, and tawa tawas that will be enjoyed beyond Potosí by those who, even far from home, haven’t forgotten this centuries-old tradition.

Transport company rates have remained the same as in previous years, allowing families to keep sending their love through Potosí’s pastries.
