THE SOUL OF CARNIVAL IN THE IMPERIAL VILLA OF POTOSI | EL ALMA DEL CARNAVAL EN LA VILLA IMPERIAL DE POTOSI

By Historia y Leyenda de la Villa Imperial de Potosí – Bolivia:

“THE SOUL OF CARNIVAL IN THE IMPERIAL VILLA OF POTOSI SINCE COLONIAL TIMES HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PARADES, EACH WITH THEIR FLAGS AND DISTINCTIVE COLORS.”

“THE FIRST RECORDS OF THE CARNIVAL PARADES OF THE IMPERIAL VILLA OF POTOSI DATE BACK TO THE YEAR 1552.”

“In the month of February of the year 1552, on the Sunday of Carnival in the Imperial Villa, two groups were formed, one of Castilians, Extremadurians, and Spanish mestizos; the other of Andalusians, some Portuguese, and foreigners. Each group marched with its captains and flags, some with red badges, and others with yellow.”

As Don Quixote de la Mancha said in 1605:

“If I were to pay you, Sancho, according to what this remedy deserves, the treasure of Venice, the mines of Potosí would be little to pay you; take what you have of mine, and set the price for each blow.”
